Recommendation for whittling?

I have started making little VERY rough "robots and figurines" for my little son while we are outdoors playing around from scraps of wood and dead

fall. Been using a SAK but wanted to get something more specific for such arduous a task. Truth be told, I have been looking for an excuse to

justify getting a GEC Geppetto.Probably in it's most basic ebony dress since it may get lost and will definitely be beat on.

Good choice? Any other choices?

Thanks for your expertise.

X-Acto knife and decent strop works pretty good but the knurled handle can cause blisters. Just picked up a couple of nice woodcarving knives from Lee Ferguson (no relationship). Tool steel, rounded rosewood handles, very reasonable.

Frost's Mora Of Sweeden. cheap, reliable, stay sharp, but will probably rust on you. i'd get more than one. they have specific knives just for whittling

Oh, go ahead and do it. You know you want to.

that's pretty amazing. any idea on how long that took?

My biggest whittling project was a ball in cage which I finished about 85% of, ball not completely freed or shaped. Mostly done with a SBJ, with some work done with my SAK Hiker's pen blade, too. :P

I did like the SBJ for it, but would want something with a bit bigger handle for full time whittling. It's great as a nice edc that goes unnoticed in your pocket, and then holds its own on the basswood, though.

If you're looking for something strictly for whittlin - take a look at Flex Cuts Carvin Jack (JKN91) or their whittlin Jack (JKN88). These are NOT pocket knives but are folders. The Carvin Jack tools (4) lock, the Whittlin Jack (2 blade) doesn't

The Case Swayback Jack is a heck of a good whittler. You have a choice of 2 great blades. Wharncliffe and pen. I whittled this using the little pen blade. The knife is comfy and gives great control. I really worked it hard and it had no ill effect on the blade whatsoever.

I think I have about thirty hours in that piece, most of it while watching tv or doing my laundry. Of course, I've had some practice.
