hey guys i didnt know where else to ask this and i hope i dont get in trouble but can someone recommend a good gun forum? the reason im asking is im thinking about buying a gun, and i dont know anything about them! i think i want to get a .22 rifle or a shot gun and ive also been looking into the .410/.22 combo. i dont want it for self defense, i just want to go target shooting. i have shoot a few guns before. so yes there is a gun show every month here in portland at the expo center so i was thinking about going there? anyways like i said if anyone has any good suggestions or advise that would be great.

thank you

dylan

I'm sure this is going to get moved since it's not RAT related, but I'd be happy to help you answer any questions you have.

thehighroad.us is a good general gun forum that doesn't have a lot of ego in my experience. I don't cruise there much anymore, but it was always a pretty good group of folks. You could just start out with a thread in general discussion saying you are a fairly new shooter and you'd like to get your first gun for target shooting.

Training is number one. Find a gun shop/range in your area that offers training classes and take a basic training class, even though you've done a little shooting in the past. Don't let the guys at the gun shop tell you what gun you "need" because what you "need" will be what they have in stock.

For a first gun, I think everyone should start with a good .22 rifle. A Ruger 10/22, a Marlin 60, etc. Then you can work up from there. Google can turn up a lot of information of course. Research before you buy. The best thing you can do before purchasing is do your homework and preferably get your hands on what you think you like.

The .410 isn't a bad little gun but it's expensive to shoot and not very good for shooting clay targets, etc. I'd pass on the .22/.410 combo for now and just start with a .22 rifle.

Feel free to email me if you have more questions. I'd be glad to help anyone get more involved in the shooting sports. adaman04 @ hotmail dot com

^ some good advice, IMO information/knowledge is first, JM.02. I used to frequent thefiringline.com but then I found BF and have been back since :)

read Alot and ask Alot of questions, don"t be afraid to ask what you might think are "dumb" questions either, handle anything and everything you can get your hands on to get a feel for what fits you best, and use good, safe, common sense.

best of luck in your search! shoot straight!

hey thanks a lot for the quick reply and the helpful info! thats not a bad idea going to the range and taking a class maybe i can get my gf to go with me.

You're very welcome. There are a lot of gun clubs around Vancouver, WA. Check some of them out online and see what they offer as far as beginners courses. Getting a girlfriend or spouse in to shooting with you makes it even more fun.

thwolf is correct about there not being any stupid questions when it comes to guns and shooting. We all learned it somewhere.

I've taken a short break from my normal gun forum activity. Started the day I discovered this forum. Lots of good folks and info here.

rimfirecentral.com has LOTS of info on .22's as well as other guns.
I used to be a regular over at XDTALK.com lots of great info there for pistols and some great sub forums for rifles and such.

^same here.

bmw4life1, I recently earned my open water scuba certification and I am, so to speak, in the same boat as you are , new to a sport that I know nothing about and dont know what to ask first , let alone what to ask at all. so i sayed late after my class and asked alot of questions, one of the insturctors even asked if I had ever purchesed a car befor and wondered how I ever made a decission because I asked so many questions.

also, please don't try any "advanced" or "tacticool" stuff you may see people doing at the range, at least until you have recievec training on how to do them safely, they maybe profesionals or they maybe idiots doing something very dangerious.

I hunt small game wit my custom Winchester model 69, that my dad had made for hunting squirrels when he was a kid. At range, I love a 10/22 for plinking.

You really can't go wrong with a Ruger 10/22, a Remington Nylon (any model), or a Marlin 60. Stay away from Savage's cheap semi-auto.

The Savage Camp is a great 22/shotgun combo, but for the range, you will enjoy a semi-auto much more. The 10/22 is clip fed, which makes it more fun at the range. Besides, I think many of us here would agree, that a 10/22 should be in everyone's gun safe.
