Loving my USN Mk1, but the stacked leather is just too slick for me. What methods of roughing it up have the best success: Wire brush, sandpaper, scoring with a gouge, farrier's rasp? I don't want to shoot myself in the foot on this mod.

NB: I don't have a belt sander or bench grinder. Dremel, drill, and lots of hand tools. Palm sander somewhere.

I used a course scotchbrite pad with good affect. Your right the leather does feel slick.

Edit: to mention adding “0” rings to the new grooves. Would be an option too.

light touch with 60 or 80 grit sandpaper or a wire brush would be my first try.
scotch brite may not do much, or may take a while -- but owuld be great for smoothing things out if you got too excited with the implements listed above.
