I'm looking forward to a summer of meets, camping trips, backpacking, etc. I've been thinking it might be time to upgrade my usual method of transporting my Fiddies and other fixed blades. It's very classy. Take a bath towel, fold in half lengthwise, add a knife, roll, add a knife, roll, etc. Tape it closed. Like I said, classy.

So I'm looking for some recommendations. Google and amazon show me some options of course, but I always like getting feedback from users that I know and trust.

Thanks!

Nathan, how many do you transport at a time? <5, pm me your address and I will mail you something better than a towel ;)

If not, a lifetime ago I used to work in fine dining; knife roll technology hasn't changed much, but wusthof, henkles, and other brands sell 5-7-9 knife rolls that are very handy

Good topic Nathan. I'll be traveling back to the US this summer and I'm concerned about transporting them and having them stolen. I'm all for hearing about some safe ways for travel.

When camping with the family, it's normally < 5. A few knives for me and the kid's knives. Going to meets is a different story. I take quite a few. Gotta show 'em off with other knife knuts. :)

I use a padded water bottle carrier from A-16 (remember them?) for transporting multiple knives. It's kind of like one of the 4" x 10" 1-liter Guyot carriers from Maxpedition or any of the millions of knock-off bottle carriers out there. Works great for everything from the Hunter down. Might even fit a Duke. It has a drawcord top and will hold multiple knives in their sheathes. The Maxpedition carriers use a zip-top so they are nice and secure. Mystery Ranch also makes a great carrier with their own version of a zip-top but I can't find them on their site right now.

How much do those go for?

I bet one of our leather workers could whip something up. I see suede, velvet, and an antler clasp.

I've had issues in the past of having things leak into my bag from outside, now I am a bit more careful. All knives receive a generous coating of mineral oil, then are wrapped in saran wrap, finally a cardboard sleeve is pulled over the blade and taped down to keep it from coming loose. TSA seems to like it, got a note of thanks once, since they have less chance of cutting themselves up.

Then again, an average trip for me is around 38 hours of airplane/airport time. A day and a half of picturing someones mystery liquid sitting on my blades just makes me stress now.

Retail is $45 but you can find them for a few dollars less if you look hard on the web. Maxpedition gear holds its value. But if place of origin (Asian country) doesn't bother you, they can be head for less than $10 on the auction site. No offense intended to any nation. If you're having trouble sourcing something similar from your location, let me know I can try and help out.

Luke, next time you're near Olympic National Park or Sequim Bay, you really must give me a call.

Yes, Talfuchre had some great pouches a few weeks ago that if expanded in length, would make great knife carriers.

that's easy. by food vacuum sealer and put them in plastic vacuumated beg, preven from sketches as well
something like this
http://www.foodsaver.com/defaultsta...cf34e09ae5b7&gclid=CIW4q5WYlcQCFQ6OaQodcF8ASw

they recommend to seal jewelries and other small staff besides the food
if by the roll, you can cut the bag for each knife

about the carry system - I use the knife carry cases that use cook students since they need to carry a set of there own knives for studies to different location and sometimes professional cooks
like this:
The Ultimate Edge EDOL Deluxe 18 Piece Knife Case, 5 Exterior Pockets, Olive - 2001-EDOL
Mercer Cutlery Triple-Zip Knife Case / Bag, Holds up to 30 Pieces - M30429M
Shun DM0882 Chef's 20-Slot Knife Case
they allow to storage and carry long fixed blades compare to
Spyderco SP2 Spyderpac Cordura Small Carrying Case, Holds 18 Folding Knives which are for folding knives
I like this spyderco case because the pocket is transparent and you see what is inside

That's only easy if you live in a highly developed country and already have the vacuum packer. I can not buy a vacuum packer or the bags in Philippines and buying one to do something like this would be silly to me. $200 in equipment (that would be hard to pack with me for the return trip) or $2.50 in saran wrap and manila folders ....

That's a good suggestion. Thank you! I'm with you, Taja's idea just won't work for me. It's not a bad suggestion, just absolutely impossible for where I live. I can however get oil and Manila folders. For me my worries are more so the theft then the moisture, but it will be smart to protect for moisture too.

Thanks for the info! I need to do a search for them and I'll see what's reasonable and how to get it down here.

I most certainly will contact you if my travels bring me that way again. What a gorgeous part of the country!! I really liked Sequim. Super cool little town and a great climate!

A knife roll made from Suede or heavy cotton would work. My mom and I made a tool roll out of cotton canvas for my nieces to keep their leather working stamps in. Making one out of suede for knives wouldn't be to much of a problem. Antler or bone button and lace would be cool. . .
