Hey all,

I have around $200 for a blade right now. I found a Spyderco Southard blacked out for $240, or I can get a BM 940-1. Which should I get?

You cant go wrong with either but I like the axis lock and since I have a big hand, I like having handle material on both sides of the knife. BM 940-1 for me.

Tough call. If you have an Axis lock blade go for the Southard. There is a reason that knife has a cult following. Brad is a genius. If you don't have an Axis my suggestion is get out to a store and compare them yourself. Quality wise you just can't go wrong with either.

My first reaction was to say the Southard, but honestly the fact that just changing the SINGLE scale from Brown to Black G-10 and charging like $50 for it is blatantly offensive to me. But knife to knife you listed I still like the Southard, but I favor Flippers anyway. I would probably get the Southard with Brown, and die the Scale and LBS black.

Don't forget Fish, the black southard has a coated blade which is probably the real reason it costs a bit more. The difference is really only $20 msrp, less at the retail level.

To the OP, I'd go with whichever one comes up on the exchange at a good price first. They're both great knives.

My bad......you meant a folder. Spyderco Police or Endura, CS triad(you pick)

I have a 940-1, it's an amazing knife. Light, smooth and cool as anything. That being said, I've always wanted a Southard, I just think the brown ones are ugly and I can't quite justify the asking price on the black version.

For a nice light edc it's hard to beat the 940. I traded one a few years ago and I've regretted it ever since. The axis lock on the 940 is very smooth and I really like the blade shape. I've never owned a Southard and doubt I ever will. The aesthetics of the Southard don't appeal to me.
