Hi,
I don't currently own any busse knives, nor have I handled any. I'm thinking about trying one out. My uses are basically fire prep while hiking / backpacking and sea kayaking. I'm thinking of the sfno, nmsfno, and the ash1. I would probly just order through the custom shop.
I like the looks of the nmsfno the best, but I don't know if it will be too heavy/cumbersome making shavings and such.
Any thoughts appreciated

I have not used a NMFSNO for fire prep however as far as blade size vs usability for your purpose, take a look at this video. A lot bigger knife does it easy, so I think with NMSFO you will be fine.

How about the TGLB ? Great size to weight ratio. Also have you considered the Axe Hammer ? Another great blade for its size and both are available.

When you say fire prep, is this going to be your primary chopper or are you carrying a small axe too?

I see what you are saying, I can't seem to play the video right now on my phone but I will later- thanks

I really like the looks of the tglb, but I can't get past the upper guard ( pun intended). Upper guards just don't work for me. I haven't really looked at the axe hammer, I'll check it out.
What attracts me to the nmsfno is the meltdown treatment ( looks super comfy for extended use) and blade shape. The ash looks cool too and it's a bit smaller mabe lighter? If ordered through the custom shop mabe .22 thick?

I can assure you that the NMSFNO is an amazing knife. However, at around 21-22oz it's not light. It does very well with chopping, batoning, and other basic fire prep chores. The Hell Razor Terror Monkey is another great choice for a knife that can handle nearly all Fire prep related tasks. Of course it won't chop as well as the NMSFNO, but it should still chop effectively. The Axe Hammer would also be an excellent choice. Good luck and keep us posted!

Does anyone have experience with the sfno/nmsfno handle shape- the hump on the back of it- does it hurt your hand when you choke up using the choil for long periods?

nope, I usually carry a folding bucksaw and a knife ranging from 4.5 to 9.5 inches depending on the season and how much weight I can carry

I have both and admittedly haven't used the sfno to any great extent the nmsfno has been my go to for canoe camping for a few years and has been a great knife for all fire prep and camp chores I haven't had any issues with long periods of use but I wear gloves the majority of the time. I haven't experienced any discomfort when choking up and using the choil.

If you want a knife that will do all that you asked and punch way above it's weight I'd say go for Chopweiler... However the sea kayaking might cause some issues with rusting...

Good to know. I'm leaning towards the nmsfno. If I order through the custom shop mabe they could round that top hump over just a bit for me, as well as the spike on the pommel.

Yeah, I kinda want to try some infi, I already have a bunch of knives. But no Busse. I have seen pics of the chopweiler and it does look like a great performer though
