So as I am starting to sharpen more and more, I am running into more recurve blades that need help. I currently have 5 recurves in the que that I cannot sharpen with my current poltava cbn stones. They are just to wide and the edges of the stones sort of dig in. So in the market for a decent set of 1/2" wide stones. I have searched around the usual places. Gritomatic has a Venev 1/2" cbn stone that looks good. They don't come in a set and only have a couple grits in stock. And sharpeningsupplies.com has some but they are not mounted to blanks. Anyone know of a good set and where to buy them? Or have a set you are not using? Thanks in advance Dan

I am wanting to use the stones on my kazak model 100, looking for a set that are mounted on aluminum blanks.

Are you willing to mount stones yourself? I can highly recommend the BORIDE Engineered Abrasives "sample kits" in 1/4"*1/2"*6" size for this. You'll save even more if you make your own blanks, which is not hard with a hacksaw and a file working on 1/8" by 1/2" extrusion.

Unlike diamond stones it is easy to round these to optimally fit recurves. Without rounding even 1/2" wide stones will hit only on the edges.

Where do you purchase the "sample kits" and thank you for the suggestion. Just checked gritomatic and the have a 5 pack of blanks for under $20 👍

borideabrasives (dot) com search e.g. "028938" for OrangeEDM coarse kit, or "028826" for CS-HD fine.

Great thanks, what bench stone would you recommend for rounding these? I have a Naniwa green coarse lobster, a king stone, and a few others.

Electroplated diamond. This is one place loose grit isn't great as it doesn't stay between the stone and the lapping plate when working only the corners. As I said in another thread:

My sample of plastic monstrosity that is the "SCOTTCHEN Diamond Flattening Stone Lapping Plate Double-sided Extra Large 10x3 inch (120&180) Grit" is flatter than my sample of the solid steel DMT Dia-Sharp Extra Coarse, and I haven't worn it out yet. Take that as you will.

Hedonizmdan Hedonizmdan By the way it doesn't take much rounding unless you're working with an extreme curvature. Make a few strokes, note where the swarf is on the stone, then reduce that area on the diamond plate and make a few more strokes etc. until you get contact over more of the stone. You want light doming, not a half round. Leaving the center flat makes it possible to get to the tip of the blade.
