hey all,

not much of a frequenter of this section of the forums, but looking for advice. my cousin's son just made eagle scout, finished his boards the month after his 16th birthday. i'm probably not as proud of him as my cousin is, but i'm still pretty proud. i know he's got a decent folder, but i'd like to get him a knife as a gift. i'm hoping to keep it under $100, and am thinking a nice slipjoint or maybe a small fixed blade. i'd really like to buy him a custom, but for that price it would probably have to be by a newer maker. to be honest, it's not a market i've really looked at. i never did the scouting thing, so i'm looking for advice as to what would be a practical knife for a scout as well as input on makers.

thanks in advance for any good advice,

Winston

Buck makes a special Eagle Scout knife that they will engrave for him. I'm sure someone will chime in with more detailed info, or you could perform a search. It has been discussed before.

You could look at the Case Clip Point Hunter

This is the version I have and carry on a daily basis:

It's worth every penny.

There are also drop point versions, and versions with rosewood scales. The sheath is excellent, especially considering that it's a 75 dollar production knife.

If you're going to get him a slipjoint, one of the Sodbuster variants wouldn't be a bad choice. Case and Boker are two companies that I know make them. I have a Jr. version by Case, and I love it. I carry it everyday, and it gets used quite a bit. If he's willing to oil his knife every once in a while, get it in CV steel. It'll retain it's edge longer.

The Spyderco Sage is a great looking knife with classy looking carbon fiber scales and a
3" blade of S30V steel. You can get them for under a $100 bucks at New Graham or Knifeworks.com

Since you say he already has a decent folder, a good fixed blade is the ticket. I'd recommend a Fallkniven F-1. It's modest in size, very tough, and suitable for hunting, camp chores, survival, or just about anything that might come up. It gets a lot of positive comments on this and other forums. It's $84.95 at Knifesupply.com, plus shipping, with a zytel sheath. Leather for a buck more.

Maybe an Alaskan Guide Buck 110 for about $68.00 dollars, available from Cabela's....

Or maybe a Buck 110 from Buck's own Custom Shoppe.
You can choose from a selection of blade-steels, handles scales, and bolsters.
I recently ordered one with S30V blade, nickel-silver bolsters, indigo scales with rivets, and black leather sheath....the total was $91.00 dollars.
And for a few dollars more you can have his name (or something else) ingraved on the blade or bolsters.

Good luck and congrats to him,

I'm an Eagle, So I'll chime in. Get him the Buck and a Multi-tool. He'll get more use out of them in the long run. He's only 16 w/ two more years of youth scouting, then school or life. I'll tell you I took my spartan, gerber-multi, and Mag AA college and still have them in the next to the bed...

A nice puukko will fit the bill. Helle Jubileum knife from Ragnars ragweed Forge. $90 and razor sharp. Can't be beat.

congrats to him for getting his eagle! i am an eagle scout too....so ill throw in what something..haha. probably a buck 110 (custom shop one). thats all really know that would be appropriate...cuz i dont know much about slip joints or fixed blades. i was always more into the folders..haha.
peace.

In my experience folders come and go and a person's tastes often change, but if you want to get him an incredible little fixed blade that will leave a lasting impression you can't go wrong with a RAT RC3. They are great little do it all fixed blades and at about $80 it fits within your budget. You can check out their website here and get a list of their distributors right here. Best of all they are made in the USA. Take a look at their warranty. A lot of forumites swear by RAT cutlery and its pretty easy to see why.

Bushcraft knife by Dan Koster or the Bushcrafter from Blind Horse Knives are some great custom fixed blades. As for production fixed blades, check out some of the knives from Helle.

lot's of great information and advice, i really appreciate it. the koster bushmaster was really what was along the lines of what i was after, but i ended up spinning off in a different direction and just ordered a gransfors mini axe. i got a couple of family members to pitch in, so that upped my price range a bit.

one of the main reasons i was after a well made knife, and i think the gransfors will fit the bill here, is that i wanted something that if properly cared for will last a lifetime. it may not see as much day to day use as a knife or good light, but will certainly get it's share.

thanks again for all the input, this is why i spend so much time on BF.
