Recommendations for a Stockman

I'm looking for a good 3 blade stockman to use as an EDC. I would like something that is moderately priced, fairly light in the pocket, and good edge retention. The one thing that I don't want is something with plastic scales. I just don't like the feel of plastic handles. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Clay

I have a small queen stockman in D2 steel. The edge retention is excellent though it takes work to get it sharp initially (Get a coarse diamond hone to profile). Mine has Delrin scales, but they have many in Cocobolo and other materials. They are reasonably priced IMHO, and the quality is very good.

Find a good selection here:

The Queens would be a great choice, as would Mooremaker, Boker, Bulldog, Eyebrand, and some of the other German makers. Queens D2 rocks!
Case makes nice bone handled ones, but their steel leaves a little to be desired.

Ditto here. :D

I have a bone Case medium stockman in CV (Chrome Vanadium, a carbon steel) steel that is great. Their stainless sucks though. I think the Autumn Bone line uses CV steel. They only offer a couple models in it for some reason. One of them is the stockman though. This info is a couple years old, they may have changed their line. I carry an Eye Brand now in stag that I really like. Again, carbon steel, not stainless. I want to pick up a Mooremaker at some point.

Good point about their CV blades, they are really nice!

I like Buck stockman folders.
Each blade has its own backspring and fit-n-finish are the best for the price.

All the above are fine choices. I carried an old timer 8OT for years and loved that stockman. Great cutter that one. But I know an x marbles dealer that has one stockman left M.S.A. 01 made for them by Queen. 1995 steel that will age gracefully like the old high carbon blades from yesteryear and a well made unit to boot. $90 as he has his line of Marbles 40% off right now.

Schrade 80T is one of the better Stockmans I have seen but if you can get one of the Remingtons made by Camillus with the Becker carbon steel that would be a good choice too.

Well, for what it's worth... I saw an Old Timer stockman with 1095 blades and the saw-cut delrin handles at Home Depot for $10! I know you said you aren't crazy for plastic handles, but that stuff isn't too bad. That's a pretty good price for that knife... if I hadn't already had a fist full of stockmen, I'd have gotten it. I'll second the Queen D2 recommendations... great knives once you work the edge to your satisfaction.

I ordered a Queen stockman with cocobolo handle today. I can't wait! :D Thanks for all of the help.

Good choice!

A cheaper version but identical quality would be one in Jigged Black Cherry (Delrin).

Did you look at Cumberland knife works? They're prices are good but what's even better is that they handle each knife before it ships out to make sure it's perfect.
