Recommendations for a Tactical 'Hawk under $200?

my vote: Lagana VTAC tomahawk. Original "Vietnam" tomahawk but with a better handle. Forged head. Excellent all around light chopper; do not expect it to be a hatchet- It's a tomahawk on a 13 inch handle. Superb close-quarters weapon, if that's your thing: hits hard and fast and can move- unlike when you swing a hacthet. Military issues it for when breeching is required. I've had my VTAC for quite a while and have done almost everything one would use a hawk for. I just ordered a Columbia River Tomahawk for a C-note, but can't comment on it yet. Hope this helps.

I'm one of the biggest fans in the world of the VTAC as well, in fact I own several of them.....but you never told us what you plan on using this tomahawk for. Your specific requirements may not lend themselves very well to the VTAC. (Man it was hard to say that!!;))

What is the purpose? Can't recommend if we don't know what it will be used for

Well, I did say "tactical"...so that I'd consider that to be self-defense, extrication, etc.

Etc??? So you want one that's balanced for throwing or for prying, one that has a spike or no spike, one piece design or synthetic handle, pry bar ended handle, electrical insulation, sharpened beard, light or heavy, long or short???

A self defense hawk and one use for extraction typically have very different qualities.

K Williams: if you want a "do everything" hawk- look at the VTAC. It gets at close as it can to a do everything hawk. There are ones that are bigger, lighter, tougher, sharper, more expensive, less expensive, prettier, uglier- it stands tall as kinda having ALL of these traits. It's smack dab in the middle. Processes wood better than a pure breacher hawk but not as good as a bush hawk and certainly not as good as a good hatchet. Breaches better than a bush hawk but not as "Hammer of Thor" as an RMJ breaching hawk. As a fighter its pretty damned good too- abit short for my taste but good if you lead with it as I think one should with a hawk. I think hawks are defensive tools or shock-and-awe tools AKA running full on into someone and hitting them. They were not meant to stand toe-to-toe with anyone with a dedicted fighting melee weapon like a gladius, large kuhkri or even large club like a baseball bat. That's why I favor smaller hawks for general do everything carry as if I need it to fight with it, it'll all be said and done one way or another after a few seconds. As for another do everything hawk with a decent price point that wont break your bank or make you NEVER want to use it as it was so expensive is a simple Cold Steel pipe hawk. Damned good hawk, when you spend a little time giving it a once over with mating the handle properly to the head and giving it a good sharpening.

I'd highly recommend the hand forged GTI Renegade Hawk by Justin Gingrich. The other hawks mentioned in the thread are also very good and probably any of them would serve you well.

Geez... LOL. One that can kill a man and go through a hardwood door. Throwing not needed.

I'll shoot another +1 for the VTAC. I've got two of them and really really enjoy them. I plan on re-profiling one specifically for woods working. If you want something full-tang, I would strongly recommend the CRKT/RMJ "Kangee" tomahawk.

To put my recommendation into perspective, Jonathan at RMJ told me that if be couldn't have one of their hawks for combat, he would go straight to the VTAC.

FSCJedi: please talk to me about the Kangee Hawk. I have one on the way. And weirdly, there aint much on it on the forum search. I do plan on putting it through its paces, but want to know what I am getting myself into. Ps- VTAC lover, huh? I guess I aint the only one with good taste :)

I had one, really liked it but never found use for it. Sold it to a fellow forumite and he LOVES the thing. For the price, it's really hard to beat.

Here's one of my VTAC's. This one has chopped through more steel and concrete than I would ever expect to put any edged weapon through and still be in one piece. It's been thrown many, many thousands of times and has been tortured for years. The spike is still as sharp as a tack and a few passes over with a mouse pad and 600 grit is all it ever takes to bring the edge back to new.

The top of this hawks heads looks like it's been hit by a bomb and the handle underneath the tape has more gouges and cuts than I can count from throwing.

No matter how many hawks and edged weapons I have (or other VTAC's for that matter), this one will always have a special place with me.

Enjoy your new VTAC K Williams, they are built to endure!

Here's one Survival Sheaths makes for the VTAC ........

Here's the one made by Ferman........

Personally I'd rather support Ferman because they make the VTAC.
