Axemen,

I've been carrying a small Gerber Pack Axe for light chopping duties on the trail and in field dressing duties, some light stuff around the camp and such, but I really don't care for the slickness of the plastic handle. It was cheap and it does ok, but as an enthusiast of edged weapons/tools, I would love to add a better quality replacement for the Pack axe and something a little bigger for campsite kindling/chopping duties. Although I prefer traditional styles, any suggestions will be considered.

Thanks guys,

I'm a big fan of the boy's axe or 3/4 axe. It's also a favorite of the few remaining timber cruisers out there. I have an old Collins boys axe and I just love it. Big enough for some serious work but still light and convenient. It's just a pleasure to use.

I haven't used the CT Boy's Axe but I've used their full size axe and many, many of their pulaski's (I do trail work). I've sharpened a dozen of their pulaski's and every one had good hard steel.

Also, there are many fine vintage boy's axes out there if you want to find one and do your own restoration.

I just got a Council Tool boys axe from bensbackwoods.com. It is the Forest service edition and has a number of refinements over the regular boys axe. It is equal. To if not better than the GB's I have. For $50 plus shipping ya can't go wrong.

I have used the 19" and 16" axes, and have found them to not offer a significant enough increase in performance over a hatchet to make them worthwhile.

If you can spare the money for a gransfors they are a true pleasure to own.
