I bought a delta Sa446 combo belt and disc sander. I had a gift cert so with free shipping it was $49.

So I will need some other belts and disc. Most of the use will be for sharpening and polishing my Khuks. What belts and disc should I order, and where is the best place to order from?

Thanks

Azis, if you have the 4X36, then it really is not setup for sharpening knives like a 1 or 2" slack belt grinder/sander, with an adj. platen. Dan is one of the the experts here on this, but up till now I have just used mine for woodworking. (Craftsman.) Since the platen underlies the entire belt, there is not the "give" that you need.

Although I did recently buy the device that was shown here the other day that elevates your belt above the platen and allows you to use it as a slack belt grinder. This works great for knives, but as pointed out not so good for many larger khuks. I also got the 4X36 leather belt and compound for it, so should be able to get some use out of the edges of the leather belt for khuks.

I plan on getting a good belt grinder for my shop in the next year, though, probably using 2" belts. The only place left in my shop for it is where I had planned to put a lathe, so that will have to give way, but I know I would use this more anyway now.

Anyway, do a search on 4X36 and you should find the thread with the link.

Norm

Yvsa mentioned trying to find a 1" or 2" belt of that length, and seeing if that would stabilize on the wheels. I tried searching once for belts; sorry, I don't recall now the results, but just 'grinding belts' gets a lot of hits. There are specialty places that sell only abrasives, wheels, and belts etc.

I have a 6 X 48 belt/disk sander and the best modification I ever made was to put a rubber sleeve on the front drum. A slightly softer surface allows me to hollow grind on it, believe it or not :D That and a more powerful, slower motor...
