I'm trying to figure out Christmas presents for my family early so I have time to save.
For my dad I think I'd like to get him a left handed folding kiridashi and my brother a higonokami folder like the ones in this thread.

My mom is a fan of NCIS and when we watch the show together when we get the chance (kind of hard with me being up in Colorado at the moment, but will be home soon as school's done). I think I want to get her the first season on DVD and a small inexpensive but decent quality knife to go along with it. I figured I'd write a note in the card like "Remember Rule #9."

Here are the criteria:
-safety is the highest concern
-~2-3" blade
-decent stainless steel, doesn't have to be a super steel. A well heat treated 440A would be more than adequate. This is mainly a little extra to go along with the DVD.
-Pocketclip is not necessary but would be nice, if she carries it it will probably be in her purse.
-One handed opening is not necessary but would be nice
-a lock that can be disengaged without putting the fingers in the path of the blade.
-I'd prefer in the $10-30 range. If I get it, it'll be along with a DVD set. This won't be the last knife I give her, eventually I'd like to make her some sort of nice letter opener or kitchen knife.

I was thinking of maybe a Spyderco like the Byrd Robin (lockback, finger choil, Boye Dent for safety), Benchmade Levitator 2, or something small along those lines.

What else am I overlooking that I should consider?

Very nice lol, I would definitly reccomend a small spyderco. they meet all of your major requirements, any of the Byrd series or perhaps a jester. All good quality, and definitly in your price range. Kershaw also has some pretty sweet small issisted knives, but they are just a tad above that range (I have a Baby Boa, NOICE gentlemanly knife with a bit of kick. Good stuff) Either way ,Im sure she'll lovew it, happy bday to them!

Any small Spyderco, (Jester) the all steel models would be nice, and you could have them engraved (Maybe have "Rule # 9" on it?). Good luck with your search.

Right now, I'm looking for a nice Spyderco Jester/Ladybug for my mom. She's been away visiting my cousin in the hospital and I'd like to get a knife to give her to replace one that she lost.

It's nice for her keychain and it can easily be put away in a pocket or purse without being bulky, and it's definately sheeple friendly and fairly safe. The red handled ladybugs look pretty nice.

Moms need the Ranger Knives RD-9 more than any other knife. Whether chopping trees, building shelters, or beheading zombies, mom's love that knife.

Other than that, a decoratively engraved stainless-handled Spyderco Kiwi would probably do well.

Byrds are good (but bit heavy (SS and G10 models)), also they are lockbacks (mostl) so safe closing is fulfilled.

Also Camillus CUDA EDC isn't bad.

I'm planning to get my mom a small knife for Christmas too. Here are some I've considered.

-Vic Classic (Going to get her one to put on her keychain. My Dad's birthday is today, he has a new Vic on his computer desk along with some chcolates and a Rush album :) )
-Byrd Meadowlark (It's pretty compact and has 3 different scale options. Useful knife with a nice grip to it.)
-Kershaw Chive (Nice and easy to open, but the torsion bar makes them a little more difficult to close, might give them trouble?)
-Spyderco Dragonfly (Another good small knife. The FRN model is extremely light and the grind is very nice on these.)

Spydercos; either the Dragonfly, Jester or Byrd; Starling, Robin or Finch.

Don't overlook the Byrd Crossbill. I gave my Mom a Spyderco Merlin for Christmas a few years ago and she loves it. The hawkbill blade style is great for gardening chores, opening packages etc.

Not knowing your Mom, it's tough to make an appropriate recommendatios but, if it were my Mom, she might get some use out of a Leatherman Micr with its scissors, nail file, and fingernail tools, as well as a small balde. Beyond that, I guess I'd go for one of those small blocky looking knifes like the Al Mar SLB.

A small SAK makes a lot of sense. Tinker works for me. If your Mom would actually use a knife for cutting, a Spyderco Native might be an option. I have been told by mechanics that having too much weight on a key chain can cause ignition problems in your car. Extra wear where the key goes in.

A Spyderco Jester seems appropriate. I gave my girlfriend a pink Jester and she loves it. Then her Mom wanted one. Then her aunt wanted one. Then her cousin wanted one. Needless to say, all the females in her extended family now own pink Jesters.

Depending on how frim you are on the "lock that can be disengaged without putting the fingers in the path of the blade" requirenment these might fit the bill:
Buck Scholar
Buck Colleague
Buck Nobleman in silver or black

The nobleman has a clip but the colleague/scholar doesn't. You can look at this thread for kinds of locks that would fit your bill.

How about an A G Russell Featherlite folder. It is nice and slim and has a lock that is sturdy and would be tough to close on accident. THANKS! Kevin

-and of course let us remember something like a Victorinox Cadet with nail file, bottle opener, screwdriver etc. Very small price and available in coloured alox handles.

Thanks for all the suggestions. After the initial post didn't get any responses I was beginning to think you guys were all anti-mother! Glad you guys proved me wrong.
