With newbie apologies to your knife pros on here for this question that I am sure has been asked and answered many times before, but just don't have the time-packing deuce gear now-to do a lot of research. I need recommendations for a "last resort" (after M-4, .45, new Ontario USMC bayo etc.) discreet carry knife for my return to the Box. Need rugged (Marine-proof) and reliable assisted folder or auto (due to some unit regs etc., prefer the former if there is one out there that will "git-r-done" quickly with one hand (I am a lefty too) as efficiently as an auto).

Many thanks in advance.

Just to get it outta the way... how much you looking to spend on this knife? Also... not to question your military expertise (I have none  ), but wouldn't the bayonet be the logical last resort? From what I've heard, most military types use their pocket knives like the rest of us, and not so much for the killing/preventing-killing.

Thanks for the reply-I was in a hurry last night-yes the knife would be for utility ass well as last-last resort. I will be in a CAG-type unit and from my last time there I know there are times when we want a less lethal "persona" than being fully loaded with weapons but still need to retain some defensive capabilities. Would like to keep cost under $200.

Spyderco Chinook I or II comes to mind, as does the Manix.
Very rugged, can be opened right or left handed, your choice of clip placement, excellent steel, good grip in all conditions, and under 200 dollars.
Also no problems with malfunctioning assisted openers or automatics due to dirt or sand, not to mention legal issues.:)

Do you already have a good multi-tool - if not, you might consider one of those. What did your squadmates use most?

Copy & Paste SC36GSE

Good knife i have one my self .

I sent two of the Microtech MSE-SC autos to my kids when they were in beautiful Baghdad for 18 months. My son is an army captain who led a recon platoon. My daughter worked at the airbase. These Microtechs survived heat and dust storms. They aren't cheap though.

My son used his trusty M9 knife/bayo opening doors, home and car. He said he would much rather carry more ammo than cutting blades.

I wish you the best of luck. Don't trust anyone or let anyone get close to you if avoidable were my son's words of wizdom to the newbies who replaced him. He laughed when he talked about the diff between army and marine. He said if a house was full of bad guys the marines would charge it. He said the army would call up an M1 Abrams, level the house, then charge it, taking fewer casualties.

Nothing more fun than that inter-service rivalry.

I'd take the Spyderco Military first. S30V steel. Flat grind. G10 scales. Almost perfect design. I think the Military was designed for just your type of request. The only qualifications I'd put on it is that it's not super fast to open. And mine seems to get grit in between the blade and handle more than my other EDCs.

Second, I'd take the Benchmade 710 in D2 steel. Super fast to open. Great steel.

Third, I'd take the Spyderco Manix, which is very, very stout. Excellent S30V steel. Flat grind. G10 scales with liners. Big in the pocket. Solid lockback. And you can probably use it to pry a tank off a Humvee.

Fourth, I'd take the Benchmade Rukus, which is a very big knife with an axis lock and a blade that flies open. Very rugged. Micarta scales fully lined. Very big. S30V steel, but not fully flat ground.

Good luck from a fellow combat vet from another era. --Josey

Here's a few you may want to check out:
Strider/Buck Tarani
Any Emerson, but I love the Commander.
Spydie Manix or Millie
Stay safe over there.

I would consider CRKT's Desert Cruiser. Very rugged knife with some combat characteristics. Snaps open in a flash.

If you can find one... A Benchmade 806D2 AFCK Axis would serve you well. Otherwise... I'd go with either the Spyderco Military or the Manix.

Before you get anything Bladewise check with the CO on what is politically corect! JMHO.

Given that he's a lefty, is the Military as good a recomendation as it would be otherwise? Most of my lefty friends are not fond of right-handed liner locks.

I'd go with a Benchmade Presidio Model 520. In my opinion probably the second strongest Benchmade - I wouldn't want to recomend the Rukus Model 610 unless I know you have big hands. There is nothing wrong with the 710, I love mine, but I think the 520 and 610 are more abuseable.

If you prefer lockbacks, then I'd go with a Spyderco Manix, unless you strongly prefer clip points, in which case get a Chinook.

Those all have internet prices in the $120-$160 range. If you'd like a knife 98% as good as any of them, at less than half the price, look at either a Benchmade Griptilian (Cabela's has them in D2, if you like) or a Spyderco D'Allara Drop Point. In my opinion those are the best two bang for the buck hard use folders available today. Another one in the same class would be the Spderco Endura 4 - get the waved version, and your last-ditch self defense folder meets an extremely affordable, tough user.

Spyderco Manix...built like a tank...real grippy G 10 handle...ambidexterous....S30 steel....razor sharp

OK, being a combat MOS (11D20) from a previous generation, what is a CAG type unit. Is it a Combat Aviation Group or Civil Affairs Group or Combat Action group or does it stand for something else that I don't know??

Not being funny. I really don't know.

Here are some of the ones I think would be good. Doug Ritter Griptilian, Swamp Rat Rat Trap, Benchmade Ares, Spyderco Chinook or Military, Kershaw Bump, Cold Steel Recon 1. There are a lot of good ones. I think any of these would be a good choice. Kevin (Also Al Mar Sere 2000)
