Hey guys and gals,

After many years I recently got bitten by the knife bug again. Been looking at some great knives and looking to spend some of my hard earned money on a new EDC folder. I know this question is going to get all sorts of answers and opinions but in the past I've valued the opinions of the the folks on this forum. So, I'm currently looking at the following Spyderco knives:
  • Spyderco Yojimbo
  • Spyderco Para 2
  • Spyderco Manix

This knife will be for EDC and self defense. Any other suggestions?

    Looking forward to your comments.

Of those three, I'm partial to the manix. It is a workhorse of a knife and probably the most versatile of the three, but takes up the most space in your pocket. If you're willing to look outside of those three, Spyderco is about to release a new Caly 3 in Hap40 steel. I have a Super Blue Caly that I love and a Hap40 Dragonfly and cannot wait to combined the two into one package.

PM2

Best pocket fit for width of the three

Can serve both roles with aplomb and not look too scary for the non knife people (sheeple)

Can find in some awesome different steels (depending on budget)

It's why I have 5 of them

If you are looking for a self defense knife the Yojimbo is made for that. It's giant boxcutter blade shape also makes it an excellent utility knife.

Spyderco makes several knives designed for self defense. The Spyderco P'kal is a great self defense knife if you are willing to learn abit about how to use it. I often carry a waved endura. I think a wave function on a knife is essential to a good self defense folder.

Other Spyderco knives come with an MBC (martial blade concepts) rated lock. This lock is made to handle the rigours of self defense action. Michael Yanich also recommends the Endura or Delica for SD knives as their locks are rated "heavy duty"

Limited to these three options, I would EDC the Para 2. For my tastes, it combines elements of EDC and SD better than the others. The Yojimbo 2 is a SD knife, if that is what you're looking for. It's just not the blade I want in my pocket for EDC tasks or anything more than light use.

The best Spyderco EDC for me is the Sage series (2 or 5), but SD is not really a consideration. I do own a Para 2 and Yo 2. No want or need for a Manix.

I would pick the Manix. Ergonomics are great and I feel like it is a little more robust than the other 2.

I'm going to just throw the Stretch out there too. Can still probably find some Hap40 kicking around. I love the Manix2 and PM2 as well though.

I'll vote manix as well! Beefy while still being a great slicer, great lock, incredible ergos.

Manix 2 LW for me. The thinness of the package fits better in pocket than the pm2 but they are definitely close.

My choice of those would be the Para2. Just personal preference. If I were to be swayed to the Manix it would be the XL.

I would get an Endura. They have been used for SD since they came out. The knife is a great design. Of the three you mention, the PM2 is the most versatile. However, the Manix, while a pocket hog, is a beast.

I love my Paramilitary 2. For an EDC it's almost perfect, just a tad big for my pocket. I'm not much of a martial artist, but I can't deny fighting invisible ninjas with it from time to time. It has incredible ergonomics and will deploy with authority. I haven't had the chance to fondle a Manix 2 yet, but it'd have to be pretty special to beat the Para.

Just be warned on the tip of the Paramilitary 2, it's thin. Insanely thin. I haven't broken mine yet, but when I do use it to puncture something, I'm a little more cautious than I'd be if I was using my Sage or Ritter Mini Grip.

Love the Yo2 and regret I sold it everyday, while carrying my lovely S110V PM2.
Not a fan of LW Manix 2 S110V because my hands don't like it (not sure if it caused by the LW texture)

The Stretch is an awesome slicer.

For ergos the Stretch and Native really lock into your grip. Super comfortable.
