I don’t know too much about fixed blades and even less about deer hunting….I have a friend who is retiring and I’d like to get him a horizontal carry knife for deer hunting. He’s a bowhunter - mostly deer but he’ll occasionally hunt larger like Bighorn out West.

Something nice …budget $500

Check out Horsewright knives, Dave Ferry, he uses a lot of horizontal sheaths for his awesome knives. A few under the available knives on his site. You can see a lot of his work in the traditional section under the thread for his knives and leather work. My favorite is the Sonoran belt knife, one up for sale now on his site. That one is AEBL, but he also has other carbon steel knives.

Lots of great makers here could help you....

If you want off the shelf, still hand made, look up Bob Dozier knives.

Many sites carry his work, many come in horizontal sheaths.

Please keep us posted with what you decide

I’m very familiar with Bob Dozier having owned his folders over the years. Didn’t know he made a horizontal sheath model. Horse Wright makes wonderful knives but forgot to mentionI need this by next month so I might not be able to get one in time.

Came across this really cool looking Dozier with horn handle which I think is quite unique and something I think he’d like. “Personal Utility” model. Not sure if he can use this for deer hunting, but there is a belly to the blade so perhaps he can? Any hunters out there can confirm this is OK for dressing a deer.? Blade length is just under 3”. If not I’ll keep looking…

Looks perfect for dressing out deer to me. I have skinned more than a few critters in my time, but other hunters here would be able to weigh in more. What I have found is that a smaller knife works better for gutting and skinning than what most folks often think of using in that role, doesn’t take much steel to unzip one if it’s sharp, and the shorter blades are more nimble.

I agree, I've used a wide variety of sizes on everything from fowl to hogs, deer and cattle. This pic has been posted in the pastScreenshot_20241025_111953_Gallery.jpg

I think this was a swatmandu, and it did fine, but I've used smaller. I've done this hundreds of times on various animals, most important to me is the design has a stop for my hand so it doesn't slip up on the blade while covered in stuff, especially when my hands are cold in sub zero winter temps.
