I've been commissioned to make a three piece hunting set as a gift for a fellow going on a hunting trip to Africa. It's his 60th birthday. The person ordering the set doesn't hunt, so she said do what I think would work. We discussed a bird and trout, a 4.5-5" hunter, and an 8" pig sticker. I'll do a combo sheath on the smaller two, and a single sheath for the larger one. The handles will be either ringed gidgee or Koa. I'm most likely to go with W2, or z-wear/cru-wear, and leaning to the higher alloy steel as it would take less maintenance.

I'm open to suggestions if anyone thinks this isn't the right combo, especially if you have gone on a safari.

Most who go on safari dont need a knife to do the game animal work and in fact many do not use a knife at all EXCEPT for the simple camp chores so thinking of a knife set for something like a US based hunt is not the same as a knife (or knives) for a safari where almost everything is taken care of for the visiting hunter.
Most experienced hunters who have discussed the concept on an African Hunting forum have decided after extensive testing that a scandi grind blade of 3 3/4 length with a uncomplicated handle is about all the knife that they have found to be suitable.
Photobucket is playing p so I cant post pic of the series of knives they have got me making for them for just the purpose that you are envisaging
