Recommendations on having custom scales/handles made...

Im looking to get some handles and scales made up for a few of my knives..Mainly a few Emersons, a Spyderco and an ESEE 3...Im about to send them out to Jeff at 4Bush for a cerakote blade and liner job and then off to get the STR lowrider clips on the folders... They will definitely need some new handle materials upon their return..

I would rather pay for quality and my own ideas from an off grid craftsman rather than a catchy or popular maker that is overwhelmed and only offering limited selection..I have seen many "pimped"or customized knives that seem to be just another category of cookie cutters sharing the same upgrades..I would like the option to pick my own colors or patterns and general contours if possible..Im not sure if this is something I should just take on myself as the materials are simple to work with and are readily available ..Although it could just end up in pile of dust and a few all nighters so maybe I will leave this to someone else..I really cant handle any more hobbies right now..:jerkit:

But any recommendations would be greatly appreciated..

Thanks all:thumbup:

I would recommend trying to search for handle materials first to suit your liking. Try to search for online shops selling scales, like blocks of stabilised wood (very beautiful) or G-10/Micarta. You'll find something you like.

But before you do any buying make sure you find someone who can do all the re-handling and work for you. Then ask the craftsman if he can work with the materials and things you supply.

I myself got a knife rehandled, with my own G-10 scales and mosaic pins attached. I had to order the scales and pins separately and ship it. Don't know of any people doing it here in bladeforums, but there are a couple of folks doing such jobs at knifeforums.

Hope your project goes well and looking forward to some pics when its all done!

Hey thanks for the responses both on the thread and the emails..

I would really just like MY KNIFE to be just that something that no one I know has..I guess the reason why most turn to customs..There are some very nice "mail away custom" kit knives made by guys on other forums but they are really just upgrade parts...

I definitely figured I would either personally pick out materials and have them sent to the modder or just relay that information on to them if they felt like ordering themselves..Theres tons of really nice materials out there that I have been looking at and I was thinking of making some interesting screw, thumb disk and pivot heads on the lathe..I do all sorts of metal and wood working but I have never really played with knife handles and scales and dont want to go practicing on NIB knives...But I will definitely post some pictures if this thought ever becomes a reality..
