Hi everyone,
Long time browser, first time poster. I currently carry two SOG Seal Pups with me camping. One is dedicated to use for carving, batoning, and other heavy-ish tasks, while the other is used for gutting fish, preparing food, and the like. I carry two because if one fails, the other can easily perform all needed tasks in its place. I'm looking to change this setup as it is fairly limited. I still love my SOGs, they were just better suited to prying doors off the hinges in Iraq than for tasks around camp. I love the Mora Clipper/Companion knives. I am pretty well set that one of the two Seal Pups will be replaced by one of these. Light, durable, sharp, and easy on the pocket book, which will allow for more money spend on the second knife. In a worst case scenario, they can be a full blown emergency bushcraft knife, though not my first go to for batoning and what not. The Mora will fill the food processing/skinning/gutting role, but in a pinch, it could fall into more demanding usage in the event my larger knife fails.
The second Seal Pup will be replaced, I'm fairly sure, by either a ESEE 6 or a Fallkniven A1. The size here right at 6 inches is right for me as I do some backpacking as well. This will be my primary blade for bigger tasks, like batoning. I also carry a laplander, so I won't be doing too much chopping with it, but if I had to, it would be there. In a pinch, as with the Mora, this knife will need to be able to fill the more delicate roles like skinning and food prep in the event the Mora fails.
I know there are a lot of posts already comparing these two blades head to head, I just wanted some opinions on which is the better choice with a second, smaller blade in the mix as well.
I also carry a spyderco native folder. Just trying to round out the kit here with my fixed blades. Weight of the larger knife is less of an issue as it will be offset by the low weight of the Mora
Thanks
