My job has me working in an environment where California code requires a non locking knife under 2.5 inches in blade length. I have been carrying a Spyderco Squeak and really love it. But I would like some other options, with different blade shapes. I like one hand opening, but will listen to any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

I carry a Spyderco Urban penknife(foliage green) very often. I think it is exactly at 2.5". They also have a orange handled one. Don't discount a SAK also!

Spyderco grasshopper. I enjoy playing with mine lol.

C138 Grasshopper:**The Grasshopper is a modern expression of the classic slipjoint penknife and an indispensible tool for everyday cutting chores. Like its smaller counterparts, it features a Trademark Round Hole for easy two-handed opening, making chipped fingernails a thing of the past.* Overall length is 5.07" (129mm), closed length is 2.77" (70mm), blade length is 2.3" (58mm) and weight is 1.4oz (40g).* Blade Steel is 3Cr.

I would go with a Spyderco Urban. Either in foliage green g10 with a leaf shape blade or orange g10 with a wharncliffe blade.

All excellent suggestions before me, but I just couldn't resist. This!

Thanks for reminding me - I kept thinking it was under 2" non-locking for K-12 schools in CA. I just re-read, and it's under 2.5".

I always have a Classic on my keychain (mostly for the scissors), but I'm picking up a Sway Back Jack and Mini Copperhead to rotate on those days when I volunteer at my daughters' school, or help my wife out in her classroom. I'll probably get an Urban if I just can't live without one-hand-opening a couple hours a week. I've also thought about a friction folder, but haven't tried one yet so have none to recommend.

Thanks Guys! I've had a look at some of these and they are all good sugestions. I'b better buy one like jimw451 pictures before California makes those illegal too, ha, ha.

Interesting - I hadn't thought of the Solo.
I have a Farmer.
Both are 91mm.
The Solo is listed as 2.62" blade, whereas the Farmer is called 2.75".
I measured my farmer with calipers, it's not quite 2.75 from tip to handle, and measures about 2.495 in a straight line along the sharpened edge.

Any idea how these supposed blade length restriction measurements are expected to be taken?
Maybe later I'll trim a piece of string or tape to follow the contour of the sharpened edge and see how that does, but I seriously doubt anybody questioning your knife is going to do that.

After some thought and reading your recommendations I have ordered a Subcom 42 and a Case Peanut in old red bone. I am also thinking about ordering a Byrd Tern and regrinding the blade down to the 2.5 inch length. Thanks guys!
