Hey everyone! Im just getting into traditional blades, after having been a knife nut for years, just the more modern variety. Anyway, I would love your input. I'd like to pick up a single bladed folder, and Im fond of wharncliffe style blades. I rather like the Case Swayback Gent or the GEC #47 Viper. Are there any others I should be aware of? Particularly in a synthetic handle, either micarta or G10? I know there are some amazing custom makers out there, but Im not in a place to drop $300+ at the moment. Thanks so much, I appreciate your time, and your patience with a traditional newb!

The new #99 comes in a wharncliffe blade.

There is a significant difference in size between the SB Gent and a GEC Viper. What size knife are you looking for?

A Case Copperlock or Mini Copperlock is a good all around knife. They make a wharnie in this pattern also. You might try something in wood. Ebony is a good dense wood that is stable and you will love the feel. Case is making a river log line of knives right now. They also make knives in G10. Their Harley Davidson line is synthetic.

The #47 Viper is the perfect hybrid between a modern folder and traditional IMHO.

Great suggestions! I like the copperlock, and those other GEC wharncliffes are sweet too. That said, I do love the #47 Viper, I just wish I could find it in Micarta! Damn thing's sold out everywhere!

If you must have synthetic scales I think you'll find the acryllics to wear just as well as the micarta. I have a Viper in the lava acryllic and it's a real eye catching pattern. I think you'll find the transition to a "traditional" a little easier if you go with a slightly larger knife like the Viper. I really like the Case SJ (have about a dozen) but it's a fairly small knife all told.

Not everywhere. PM me.

Thinking of GEC, there are also models that have linerlocks like the #55 houndstooth. There is also various congress (#51 and #52) patterns and the #26 pattern which all have single springs but a small secondary blade. if you are looking for a single blade because it is slimmer, there is also the benefit of single springs with two blades! The #92 also has a good amount sold in synthetics with wharncliff blades. AAhhh so much to choose from!

Here are some pix to consider:

Here's a Swayback Gent sandwiched between a #92 Talon in lava kirinite and a Northwoods Hawthorne in blue camel bone. The Swayback is pretty small by comparison. The Hawthorne is also available in olive drab micarta. It's pretty stout with the saber grind and fills the hand nicely. Sorry for the crummy pic.

The Hawthorne is also easily opened by pinching the blade with your fingers instead of using the nail nick. It also has steel liners and pins as opposed to brass.... and, it's made by GEC.

Thanks, guys ... now want a Swayback pattern by GEC!

The Eureka is really great looking
.... and I thought no more new knives, except from changes....

I just ordered a Wall Street (GEC #99) in micarta with a wharncliff blade. You might look at those.
