Okay, I need a $200-$250 dollar guitar for a carry around beater. I've got a D-15, not the most expensive guitar out there, but it's my baby and I don't like to drag it around to youth camps and activities and such.

I may be willing to go up to $300.

I just slightly even further may be willing to go to $350-$380 dollars. (Okay, what I really want to know is a Seagull S6 better than the $200-$250 guitar I'd prefer to buy?)

I'd really prefer $200-$250 though. Maybe $300 or a little over. (All right, I just can't make up my mind! :D )

I've heard of a Yamaha model which people seem to rate highly, and I think is in that price range.

What about Art and Lutherie guitars? Are they any good?

Or would I be able to pick up a laminate or HPL Martin in one of those price ranges?

Any ideas for me?

Seagulls are a good buy for the money. Art and Lutherie are made by the same company that makes Seagull, and for the money they are probably the best buy out there. The A&L Folk is a really nice guitar and you can get it in a solid top model. I also came really close to buying the Seagull Grand but opted for the Baby Taylor instead as it fit my son better. Cedar tops are not a real problem, they are softer than spruce and thus are more prone to getting dinged a bit but they are not going to splinter or fly apart on you.

Right now I'm playing a Yamaha FD-01s, solid top, laminate back and sides, runs about $150 new online and is a terrific guitar. Set up oout of the box was terrific, it plays easily and has really good intonation and tone for a sub $200 guitar. It holds it tuning amazing well, better than my Baby Taylor. You can't go wrong with this one either. If you want to save some cash, check out the low end Yamaha solid tops or the A&L Folks.

All right, thanks for the info. I hope to go play some guitars today and look at a few different brands/models.

I have been very impressed by the Little Martin LX1 which Elderly list at $279. Loud, nice to play, small and tough.

Ovation or Takamini - my Ovation lasted forever until it was attacked by a whackjob and smashed on some furniture. We're divorcing now. :D

I have an Art & Lutherie that I bought in a pawn shop for $85 and it turned out to be from their custom shop and work about 10 times that.

I also had one of the limited edition Takamini guitars but that went the way of the whackjob, too.

Takamine guitars play wonderfully- I let a 12 string acoustic/electric koa pass me by, big mistake. I currently have a fender f-230, with a bone bridge and nut, I really like the sound, but it's typical fender construction. I have only seen one yamaha that I'd get, a thinline acoustic/electric that played well, but probably better throughan amp.

Just out of curosity .. Any thoughts on the guitar telemarketed by Estabon? I honestly don't know if it's any good or not, but .... ?? The price could be right, especially if you pick up one on Ebay. Just a thought.

Go used and cruise the pawn shops, classifieds in local papers. Forget ebay, everyone thinks they have the lost gison moderne.

Thanks for all the replies. I got a guitar yesterday. A Seagull S6+ GT for $225, which was a really good deal. Cream City Music in Milwaukee was having a big sale, so I was able to get a $400 dollar guitar within my budget.

Again, thanks for all the advice.
