Hello everyone,
I am a soldier currently on active duty and it has come to my attention that everyone in my platoon except me has some type of knife, I have decided to get one for myself.
I don't know a lot about the brands or the types, I would thank you all if you could help me out on this one.
I saw the cold steel SRK as an option, also I have been looking at gerbers (strongarm) and SOG (seal pup) knives but I have learned that the knives community does not recommend those companies.
Also feel free to suggest any other brand or knife model
Thank ahead to all those who answer!
(Apologies for any typos)

What means for maintenance do you have at your disposal or access to? For example, there are steels that will be difficult to sharpen with a simple stone, or geometries like a full convex grind that require technique (or a slack belt grinder).

A midrange stainless steel with a flat or sabre ground blade with secondary bevel is probably your best option. Many to choose from in that regard.

Hi again, thank you all so much for all the replies, I'm glad to find such a pleasant and supportive community!
Lots of you said to check out the knives of my fellow comrades, and I did before I wrote the first post, I tried some of them and I'll list the ones I like shortly,
It's just that they are not much of knife experts, lots of what one friend told me contradicts with what another friend said,
Some even said completely different things about the same knife!
That's why I reached out to this forum, to hopefully be able to try and make sense of all the info I'm getting.

I would like to ask you about the following knives:

- Buck Ground Combat knife
- Gerber Strong Arm
- Cold Steel SRK (the regular and the compact versions)
- Cold Steel Razor-Tec 5
- SOG Seal Pup
- SOG Recondo FX

(Currently the Buck GCK is the front runner)

If any of you have One of those knives and could share your opinion on them it would help me wonders with my decision!
once again if you can think about other models to suggest please feel free to do so

Thank you all very much for your replies!

Welcome to the forum, I would prefer to give you some advice instead of recommending a brand. I think it would be better to choose a more versatile knife instead of buying a knife for fighting. There is no accounting for the conditions you may find yourself in during military service (I say this because I did my military service in a region with harsh conditions). You need a durable knife that will serve you in all conditions, that you can use with gloves, that does not have exposed metal in the handle (sometimes you have to put your knife in a place with electrical leakage), that you can easily sharpen in the field. If you want to hear a brand model, cold steel recon tanto or srk are my favorite knives on this subject.

Thanks for your service. I was in the U.S. Navy from 1983-1987. We had a problem with things walking off. I would hate for you to spend a lot of your hard earned money, just for someone to steal it. That being said, I will recommend either a Buck 119, a Cold Steel SRK, or a Leatherman tool. The knives are cool but probably won't be used much. The Leatherman will probably be used quite frequently. Good luck and let us know what you decide to get. Thanks again for your service.

In light of this, you’re doing the right thing.
In hind sight this doesn’t suprise me.
There’s also a hidden moral here about about the “ultimate knife for confrontational use”

Thank you very much for the reply! I did not think about the isolating grip, I heard very good things about the SRK but I am worried about its tang, from what I understand it's a full tang but not very wide, if you have good experience with it I will consider getting this one
Once again thank you for your reply
