Hi, I am looking for a folder to carry on weekends as a ultility knife. I would like to get one that has full handles or I'd get the Camillus EDC, I'd prefer US made (although not an absolute),anything but a lock back, easy one hand opening. I have a Benchmade Mel Pardue 350SBT which I like, except it doesn't open as well as I'd like. I have been carrying a Colt branded AR-15 knife, I think it was made for them in Taiwan, which I love- opens easily- with a flick of the wrist, stays sharp BUT the lock is positioned on the back. Somehow, I seem to hit it when I'm using the knife. If it were a liner lock like the Benchmade, I'd be happy with it. Please Help! Thanks

A pretty tall order. Take a look at the BM Griptilian, CRKTs offerings, and don't rule out Spyderco. The David Boye dent adds a greater margin of safety in the lock back.

Benchmade 55X Griptilian series are good knives that fit your criteria.

Check out the BM Griptillian, either the 550 or 551 (drop point) -- easy opening and the security of the Axis lock.

At the upper end of your price range, you might be able to find a Spyderco Wegner Jr. It's discontinued, but some are still around if you look. G-10 full scales, ATS-34 steel, and a liner lock. Nice little package.

take a look at the bm 555 easy to open has a finger hole if not the bm 556 has a thumb stud My bm 555 cost me $51.00 shipped should get it tomorrow so I will be looking for that ups truck can not wait !!!!!

Get a BM with an axis-lock,blade flicks out, blade flicks in,makes a liner lock obsolete. :D

Just outta curiousity... what've you got against lockbacks?

Also how about a Spyderco Vesuvius or Salsa?
Also try an Outdoor Edge Magna and CRKT M16 (the aluminum models) or M18.
Also one last thing to mention: sure the Camillus EDC is small, but for some odd reason, through the miracle of ergonomics, it fits right even in my very large hands.

Check out the CRKT Bladelock.
It just takes a little practice and , before you know it, you'll be addicted.

I can't wait till Spyderco puts the Compression Lock on more models.

Good luck,
Allen.

Youngcutter,

Just outta curiousity... what've you got against lockbacks?

Basenji703 said he has a problem with accidentally hitting the lock (and unlocking it?) on his Colt lockback knife. I have often wondered myself if this might be a problem with lockbacks. It just seems like the lockback design should be more prone to accidental unlocking.

In this price range the best knife you can get (IMHO) is the new 2001 Spyderco Delica... It is a newer version of a lock back with the addition of the David Boye dent in the locking lever... I've handled it for quite a while - the old Delica would accidentally open on me a couple of times, the new one never did that... The knife retails for $78.95, but you can buy a brand spanking new one off the trusted dealer on eBay for $45.99... That's $50.49 out the door with shipping charges - can't beat that knife for the money bro.

In addition this is one the fastest non-auto knives to deploy. It sits in a pocket with the spyderco round hole to the top... It's easy to grab the knife by the blade (placing your thumb in the hole) and flick the frist when you pull the knife out. The handle drops right in your hand when you get the knife out of pocket - it's like pulling out a fixblade :)

Well at the low end of your range take a look at a Buck Crosslock. It doesn't have any flashy materials but it is a good solid liner lock with a very beefy utilitarian blade. I carry mine every day.

Speaking of Buck knives...
I like Buck's lock-back placement better than Spyderco's: The Spyderco's are in mid-grip while the Buck's are at the end of the handle, where it's less likely to be pressed upon while gripping the handle.

I just picked up a black Kershaw Avalanche on ebay for $60. Great handle, CPM440V blade, and very easy opening.

Try the CRKT M-18 - Good steel, great blade shape and the flipper.:D
Should be around 62 - 65 bucks online.

Since that blows Spyderco out of the water, I would recommend Benchmade or a Kershaw Onion.

A Gerber Air Ranger II sounds like it would fit your wants. That model is a slightly bigger Air Ranger (3 3/4 inch blade), liner lock, AUS-8, light weight. Bought one at Cabela's last month for $45.00. Check one out if you are at a store that has one as they are pretty nice for the money.

First post? Welcome.

For your price range, why not go to www.knifekits.com and build your own? You can do it with files and a sanding block and you'll know more about knives - and locking mechanisms - when you are done.
