Recommended Pepper Spray?

Hello All,

I need you experts to recommend a good pepper spray. My wife often takes our dog on long walks (on a leash). She is worried about stray dogs harassing her and fighting with our dog. (No problems as of yet, but she wants to be prepared).

What type of spray (if any) would you guys recommend for use on an aggressive stray dog. We're not really worried too much about muggers, since our dog (Weimarainer) is large and protective, but effectiveness against aggressive humans is a consideration also.

Thanks!

Ditto on the Fox Labs. I've had LEO from different PDs recommend it.

If not Fox, be sure to use something that combines Mace and Pepper Spray. One or the other might be more effective on certain dogs (or human attackers), and with the mix you minimize the risk of running up against a spray-resistant attacker.

Yep, the anecdotal evidence from LEOs is that Fox works best. Fox has the highest heat rating, 5.3M SHU vs the usual 2M SHU for just about everything else, and in this case, the stats seem to be bourne out in efficacy.

I have to agree about the Fox Labs Spray.

I remember my late dad telling the story of a friend who encountered a perp and when he went to spray the guy it just dribbled out of the can - the perp laughed so hard that the friend was able to run away.

Stick with a proven product like Fox that the LEO's use.

I used to have a job reading electric meters... Had to go in back yards and around people's houses to find 'em. Encountered LOTS of dogs. Only had to use the pepper spray 3 times. Go to any bike store and get a can from them. Mine is called HALT, and it works great after having been used a couple of times, and after sitting for a long time. I keep it in the truck in case I ever need it again.

Oh,the three times... A German Shepard came out of a garage AT me; I'd entered a chain link fence around the yard with a wary eye as there were Beware of Dog signs everywhere. I'm firmly convinced he would have torn me to ribbons. I yelled when he came at me, but he didn't even pause, so I fired the spray. Stopped him like he'd hit a wall! (I hated to do it, but it was him or me, and being employed by a utility, I had a right to be there)

Second time was in the hood and a pit bull type came UNDER a chain link fence at me. I was thinking I was cool because he was on the other side of the fence from the house I had to read. Scared the crap outta me! He was on a chain and couldn't have gotten to me anyway, but the HALT stopped him dead, just like the other dog. I wouldn't have hosed him but he started me.

Third time was another pit bull type in the hood. This one was even bigger and he was dragging a broken, THICK chain behind him. I thought I was screwed royally. I yelled at him and he started walking toward me, so I put a stream on the ground in front of him (probably 10 feet from him) He disappeared in the other direction and I never saw where he went.

The stuff isn't as expensive as the crazed-druggie-maniac stoppers, but for dogs (and other animals) it should work fine. And I bet it'd work okay on any to-leggers that wanted to cause problems too.

Another thumbs up for FOX.
I have used it twice on unleashed aggressive dogs and while they didn't run off howling, neither continued their advance towards me.
While you may have good luck with any brand spray for extended periods, it is inexpensive enough to replace every 24 months.
And yes, as rebeltf stated, be VERY careful leaving it in a hot vehicle. Last summer, my ex-wife left some in her purse (don't recall the brand) in a closed pickup truck in July. Very nasty cleanup and thankfully she and the kids weren't driving at the time. The results could have been much worse.

i have had good luck with fox and punch myself. streamers are my favored delivery sysytem FWIW, wind seems to have less effect on it than the fog. doesnt matter that much though,

Thanks Everybody for the great suggestions.

I think we are going to check out the Fox spray.
