Hi all,

I'm making the transition to free-hand stones from a Spyderco Sharpmaker. As the title states, I would like to hear your opinions/recommendations on two specific stones (or combo stone) with grits of ~250 and ~1000. Water stones or oil stones, I don't have a preference. I would like to keep this under $80. I already own a strop and I will probably add a ~3000 grit stone to the system in the future.

Thanks for your time!

CKTG combination 400/1000 diamond plate for $35 is a great starter setup. Not too much invested if you find freehand is not for you, but along with your strop is capable of a great working edge on most steels.

Not sure bout exact grit, bur either type of Norton Dual benchstone should take you to that type of finish.

You can go straight from that to the top of a car window to get it scary.
