I couldn't get the search function to work so what sharpening stones are recommended and where can they be bought? I might like a nice desktop stone, a small portable and maybe some sort of rounded long one for recurves. I'll be a newbie at freehand.

For flat stones I recommend the Razor Edge coarse and fine - they are used dry so no mess. Look them up in a search engine such as google.

The DMT duo sharp is a nice choice. I have the 8" and I really like it. You get the sharpening power of diamonds, the flexibility of a different grit on each side, plus they look cool just sitting there. Make sure to get the base, it's essential.

The Smith's Tri-Hone is pretty handy...I have one and I use it often.

For re-profiling, coarse carborundum or diamond benchstone.

Spyderco Medium (gray), Spyderco Fine (white) ceramic benchstones are excellent and last forever.

The small Spyderco combination stone (white and gray combined) is an outstanding tool for quick edge touch-ups.

For fine polishing, nothing beats a strop loaded with whatever abrasive grit compound suitable for the job.

In addition to the DMT diamond hones and the excellent Spyderco ceramic bench stones (and Sharpmaker) the Norton Fine India and Medium Crystolon bench stones are very useful.

To round out your collection you might want to add some Arkansas or water stones depending on how complete a lineup you're after.

To kick it off I went with Dan's Whetstone 4x1x1/2 soft Arkansas (600 grit equiv.) and a translucent (1000 grit equiv.) along with some honing oil with the holding the knife in one position technique running the stone over the edge (vs. benchstones, for now).
