Hi all,

I'm looking for a field knife to add to my collection and would like to hear your suggestions.

It would be a one-and-only tool, so needs to be able to do fine work as well as heavy stuff like shelter building. I favor smoothish handles to rubberized grips, which tend to give me blisters. The blade should be stainless of some sort, mostly because I hate the taste of fruit cut by a high carbon blade. I like a 5-7 inch blade that isn't too pointy to skin with and isn't too fat to slice with. No upswept tips, sharpened clips, or serrations - simple is best. Weight is not a huge concern. Less than $100 is preferred.

I am rethinking my moratorium on chopping, just for this knife. I like the looks of the BK & T Combat Utility 7 a lot, but it isn't stainless. What are your thoughts on chopping, say, 2-3 inch diameter green wood, with this knife versus using a folding saw? I would expect a knife that can chop to be next to useless for finer work.

In that price range for the heavy stuff, I like the Livesay Air Assault, the Greco Companion and Greco Green River Camp Knife. They are not stainless though. For lighter duty and food items, I like the Victorinox Tinker, or one of the Vic SAK locking blades with saw.

Get an axe or hatchet for the chopping, then you can use a smaller blade for your fine work and have more control. Buy a Fallkniven F1 or S1, and an ATC or Gerber Sportaxe.

Hello everyone,

I'll have to recommend the Fallkniven too. Just got the S1 and it's awesome.

Sounds like a perfect fit for a Fallkniven A1. That knife can do it all. With careful shopping, a person can find one in your price range. In fact, I believe there is one for sale right now in the for sale forums.

beezaur, the knife you have discribed is...
the Buck Nighthawk. I own two and find them
to be the best field knife I've ever owned.

I've used mine for everything from punching
holes in 55 gal drums, digging holes, to dressing
out several deer. Not once did this knife fail
or dull where I couldn't re-edge easily.

Considering that this knife was designed for severe military use it is , IMO, the best most comfortable
knife fot the money. The 'hawk has never raised a
blister or pinched my hand nor gotten slippery
with blood / fat yet so I'll stick with it for a
very long time.

Try one ,mate. You won't be sorry:D

Sounds like the Fallkniven A1 is perfect for your needs. The CU/7 is a nice blade, but FAR too light and neutrally balanced to be a good chopper. It does have good steel, though. I would go with the Fallkniven for the stainless which you prefer, and the convex grind for ease of resharpening.

Another vote for the Fallkniven S1! But I would also opt for the Gransfors Bruks "Small Forest Axe". Believe me,...... there's nothing out there that you couldn't manage with the SFA and the S1!!

If you are limited to only one item (by whatever reason) than go with the Fallkniven A1! Once again, my coice would be S1 + Small Forest Axe!

greetings,
Gerry
