Recon 1 after a holiday at the beach

A friend of mine just returned from his vacation to Panama and Costa Rica. Before he left he had asked for some knife advice (not for this trip in particular, but just a general EDC) and he ended up buying a Recon 1. Solid choice considering his budget and the meagre choices available at stores here.

Anyway, he took the knife on his trip, used it everyday and probably didn't take very good care of it. It's rusted and the lock doesn't work well, it might be full of sand or something like that, it doesn't even retain the blade when closed. He took the pictures, I only saw the knife quickly.

Was it with soap and hot water with a scrub brush. Dry it off, oil it up an good to go. Looks to have been repeatedly dunked in salt water.

Looks like it was used in or around some salt water and not rinsed or cleaned at all. Get it cleaned up real good and it should return to normal, maybe.

Clean it now please, its bothering me.

If it were mine it would never had reached that state. It belongs to a mate of mine who's not a knife guy. He used a Byrd Meadowlark for a while (broke the clip but the rest of the knife is fine) and then moved up to the Recon 1 which is only a couple of months old.

I only had a quick glance at the knife as we were leaving the gym and then asked him for some pictures over Facebook chat. Mainly because I wanted to see if I could spot what's keeping the lock from working well.

I would take it apart to clean it. Get all in the lock as well as the spring. If it takes down anything like the American Lawman it should be quite simple.

I love cleaning up and fixing stuff like that. Im sure it will bounce right back. Poor CS. When my AK was gunked up the lock would not plunge in deep enough. That is an easy enough fix I think. Let us know how it does after a good cleaning.

For all the strength of the Triad lock, it does not do well with sand, grit, or rust. Once it cleans up though it should be A okay!

The Recon 1 is super easy to take apart and clean. Should be fine after that.

Yeah I think that must be from saltwater or something. My knives get wet plenty and I've never seen rust like that. Did he go swimming with it?

He was at the beach for a while (probably swam with it) and also spent some time in the jungle. Apparently he couldn't be bothered to rinse the poor thing in fresh water.
