Recon 1 CTS-XHP V. S35VN

Here is a very good video and testing of both steels and two cold steel products. Me personally I like xhp. The video talks about sharpening. Wish they made the Bush Ranger with xhp.

what stones do you have now?

I find xhp a bit easier to keep sharp. haven't tried reprofiling it yet but for touching up I prefer xhp.

I dont own a cold steel s35vn yet but I own many other brands in that steel.

If they made the Bush Ranger with xhp, I d have to buy one. As it is I don t see what the Bush Ranger offers that my Ultimate Hunter doesn't already give me.

I have a Razor edge coarse which I use to reprofile and Norton India.I will also use the Razor Edge fine at times

I guess what I wanted to know is can I use same stones I used on the CTS-Xhp or are diamonds imperative?

With elements like Vanadium and Niobium regular Aluminum oxide and Silicon Carbide abrasives will have a very tough time considering they are both softer than the alloys in the steel. Personally, I though S35VN was a bad choice in steels simply from a sharpening standpoint. CTS-XHP is almost comically easy to sharpen and get a quality edge on with nearly any sharpening stone and will hold that edge very well. S35VN seems to have a strong preference to a Coarse edge and because of the hard carbides in the steel anything but diamond will yield lack luster results... And while I like my Coarse DMT and loaded stropping for sharpening such steels it's just not what I want in a Cold Steel knife. CS knives have always been a good value, good performer and easy to maintain. Now, the price is still good but the performance is taking a step back and the maintenance is getting more difficult. Not really the direction i wish they would head.

Good information, but as a Cold Steel fan, I hate to hear it.
