Recon 1 in D2 ?

Good day all. I have an old AUS8 Recon 1 which I enjoy. But the s35vn version up here in Canada is $160.00 before tax. That's just too much for me to justify another toy when I already have three tubs of steel. However I bet that the Recon 1 in D2 would be much more affordable than the s35vn version. Cold Steel already makes several very large affordable fixed blades in D2, that I own. Would the edge last as long as the s35vn ?, I don't know, likely not, but it would be many steps closer than the old AUS8. This option would be a nice choice for us D2 owners already set up for sharpening that steel.

AUS10 would probably be a better choice. Cold steel already doing that for Espada. Hope they apply the same method for more affordable but high perf Recon 1 and Lawman. There seem to be a big market for this judging from the affordable high qualities Chinese brands like Civivi, Tangram, Bestech etc in recent years.

We wouldn't be able to do that unfortunately. The Recon1 is one of our most popular knives, people love the price point for the strength and materials.

Isn’t CTS XHP close to D2?
Yeah they are essentially the same aside from CTS having 4% more chromium.

At Cold Steel, will we ever see a 3V folder though? I'd love, love to see a sprint or limited run of the Recon I 3V.

In my experience XHP holds an edge much longer than D2. Aside from differences in chemical make-up, XHP is a powered steel.
No complaints with the S35VN that CS is using a lot of now but I do prefer XHP.

Recon I 3V.
:) 3V might be a bit of overkill on a 4" blade . S35VN is already pretty tough enough for most folder use, IMO .

Be most functional on a big Bowie or Kuk . Although , just might work on the biggest Rajah folder .:thumbsup::thumbsup:

I get that. However I don't love 3V only for it's toughness. 3V and it's brethren Cruwear and Zwear are some of my favorite steels I have used (in folder platform too) just because of the type of edge it takes and how it holds it.

I will say that i actually prefer S35VN to XHP, and depending on heat treatment S35VN (if I recall) should theoretically be tougher as well. So I have zero complaints with Cold Steels newer heat treats, or their choice of S35VN either.

But I agree with your picks as well. Would love to see some more fixed blade models released in 3V

Definitely agree with not downgrading the Recon 1. If people want a tough folder comparable with the Recon1, with Aus10, look at the Voyager. That is a very nice knife.
I think a steel upgrade option, like 20 cv, would be very popular, if the price point is managed well.
