Good evening. I recently acquired a Recon 1 a couple of months ago, and simply love it. It has quickly become my favorite folder. I did a search, but my google foo has failed me. I'm curious. Does anyone know what year the Recon 1 was first introduced? Thanks in advance.

The latest triad lock model is first introduced in 2010. Back then it was aus8a with teflon coating and hollow ground. Now we got S35VN with flatgrind, proper sharpening choil, DLC coating and come in 3 colors. CS has come a long way since then.

The Recon 1 series was first seen in the 2001 catalog...back then it had the Ultra Lock, which was like the Axis Lock. Blade was AUS8A, and handle was Zytel. In 2006 the handle changed to G-10, and then in 2010, as mentioned above by hkyew, the design changed to incorporate the Tri-Ad lock.

I think both steels are great in their own regards, you would be served well by either. I personally like CTS XHP from my limited use over the last couple of years. It seems to be a little tougher and resist impacts against hard surfaces.

Even AUS8 was fine but the DLC coating is much better . Slight advantage to XHP over S35 , just from what the steel nerds say ? I wouldn't worry much over it .

S35VN, XHP, whatever, you’ll be fine. Remember just less than 3 years ago we still got AUS8A for most CS including recon 1. There were a lot of complaints back then but there were also a lot of people who’s okay. If you were to tell me back in 2015 that CS is switching to D2 i wouda been fine with it, now we got S35VN. I don’t think the typical cutting tasks that you need knife for has changed much since 2015.

Both CTS-XHP and S35VN are far better than Aus8. CTS-XHP is better than S35VN in edge holding, not sure abt anything else.

When will CS make a stonewashed Recon 1 of regular production? Just like they replaced the black MH with a stonewashed blade. I know there was a canadian exclusive stonewashed Recon 1 but ...

BTW, is it well accepted that cts-xhp holds an edge longer than cpm-s35vn?
