Just a heads up- I have bought 2 new AK-47 folders and 1 new Recon 1 Tanto, and they finally come sharpened all the way to the sharpening choil. I know this has been a complaint many have had over the years, including myself. This is a very welcome change.
To note: the AK-47 now comes with a flat grind. The Recon 1 Tanto kept the hollow grind (thank goodness!)
The Recon 1 had a couple issues out of the box.
For one, the G10 handles were extremely chalky and dry. The action was dry and gritty. Never experienced this level of all around grittiness on a new Recon 1, and I’ve had a lot of them.
Secondly, the blade nearly rubbed the handle, it was so uncentered. Not very common with these. I tried everything to try to get it centered, and could not. I finally swapped the handles with a pre-GSM Recon 1 I had laying around, and now it’s fine. The issue, I deduce, was that one of the handle slabs were warped or possibly drilled out of alignment.
I wish I had snapped a picture of the very dry, chalky handles, but I didn’t. I mineral oiled them in the process so they’re not bad now.
Here’s a quick not so great pic showing the new blades ground all the way to the choils (keep in mind the R1 has older scales, custom clip, and snaggletooth):
