Have always wanted a Recon 1. Would like some opinions on which blade type is more practical for edc. I like both styles but have read that tanto blades can be a pain to sharpen. Thanks!

All three are great, clip, spear and tanto. I tend to carry my spear and clip point more than the tanto but that's just because I have the spear and clip in the satin blade exclusive and prefer them over black DLC blades. Although my father has carried a black blade Recon tanto for years as his work knife and absolutely loves it to death. Sharpening isn't really an issue on the tantos as long as you have a bit of sharpening experience and understand angles/geometry. Sometimes the belly on the spear and clip points can help with certain cuts but it also works the other way round, sometimes the tanto tip really comes in handy over the others. Buy the one you like the looks of best and you won't be disappointed. After using a recon i'm betting you'll grab all 3 blade types eventually, they're amazing knives.

Clip or spear point is the way to go. Functionally similar just go with whichever looks better to you

I like both the clip and the tanto. The clip point version is flat ground while the tanto is hollow ground. Personally I like the way a hollow grind looks and cuts.
I have a Code 4 tanto so I've resisted buying the Recon 1 tanto.

I find tantos a pain cause its 4 sides to sharpen vs. 2. that said it isnt that much harder. I own a few of each types. just pick whichever ya like.

Thanks for the replies. I wish I could get all 3 blade types, but that’s a lot of cash/money, LOL! I think it will be the clip point for me!
You will not be disappointed. After switching it up from my spear point and carrying the clip point again, i've decided the clip varient is my favourite of the bunch, just a dam good looking functional blade.

I ve always been a spear point fan. I thought that perhaps that was a stronger blade. But after using the clip point Recon 1 lately I think that works just as well as the spear point, and I m starting to like the appearance better.

I think the clip point looks a bit less scary for use in public . Although by now the Tanto is much more common and familiar now than in the 80's say .

I tend more toward the Tanto for EDC but keep other styles when appropriate for use. For many years now I have associated the "Tanto" with Cold Steel rightly or wrongly. I still remember sometime in the eighties seeing my first CS Tanto and being blown away with it(Gerber were my knives of choice then).

:) Me too ! Way back in the day , the CS Master Tanto was super exotic . I'd never seen the like outside of a few Japanese classic Samurai movies . Had to have it along with all the other lengths of San Mai Tanto and the black Recon Tanto Carbon V , too . The Tanto Voyager completed my CS Tanto Madness .
