recon bowie

Hi Slow,

The SOG Recon Bowie is NOW available! It has been shipping for a couple of weeks now. Call SOG's Consumer Services Department for dealer/purchasing information at (888) SOG BEST.

It is one beautiful knife!

How does the Recon compare to the regular SOG Bowie ? Are the steels the same? What about the gaurd? Thanks for any info.

Hi Snappy,

The materials are very similar between the SOG Bowie and the Recon Bowie. SK-5 carbon steel for the blade and leather washer handle. The Recon differs, of course in blade style, but also sports a brass guard and butt cap.

Any other question? Just ask!

Can anyone tell me exactly what gun blued means? I have recently purchased a sog recon bowie SBR-80. I found it online. The box is marked SBR 80-RECON BOWIE. It is also marked SEKI JAPAN on one side, sog on the other. I have seen pictures online and it seems that the blade is made of the color of stainless steel(silver). The one I purchased is not black but certainly a darker steel. I want to make sure I purchased the right knife. Also the sheath does not have a sharpening stone like some I have seen online. Any help or information would be much appreciated.. Thanks, Pete G

I really appreciate the quick reply. I will have my daughter take some pics and post them. I am clueless as to how to do that. Great articles on gun blueing, Thanks. Feels like a very well made knife. The end or butt of the knife has a small silver circle with 2 small rectangles next to it. I will post pictures soon. Thanks Again, Pete G

only carbon steel blades can be gun blued.
in simple terms, an acidic dark staining as a result of a controlled chemical reaction.
gun blued would have been the finishing found on the S1 bowie, midnight tiger, sog recon government, sog tech (can't remember what the blued version is called.
btw, i can't believe that a 10 year old thread has been resurrected.

It is a record!!! 10 years later. The only think I would like to add would be my Recon does not have a sharpening stone or pouch on it.

Pete,

Congrats on the Recon Bowie !!

The Recon Bowie one of my most-favorite of SOG knives, and IMHO the best-looking too. Incredible edge-holding, even if I don't touch it for 6 months it just won't lose the razor edge. I couldn't say for sure if SOG ever put a sharpening stone pocket on the sheath, mine doesn't have one.

Cheers,

Carl

Blued version of the Tech is called the Nite (or Midnite) Tech.

From my perspective, "bluing" is a misnomer. I have yet to see any SOG product with any "blue" coloring in the bluing. It's either dark gray or black.

Links below are great background material.

Recon Bowie and sharpening stone...memory clouding, but I"m 99% sure only the SOG Bowie & Trident got the stones and NOT the Recons. I'd be more than happy to be wrong, but I went back into archives and did not find evidence of a stone with the Recon.

Great knives...you can't go wrong.

Carl, thanks for the heads up, here. :)

Yep. SOG Recon Bowie never came with a sharpening stone. The sheath was commonly misrepresented on many of the retail sites. That's where the confusion came in. Most of the time, you'd see the Recon Bowie displayed on the sites with the Scuba Demo's sheath. I much prefer the Recon Bowie's sheath. I'm not a fan at all of the leather sheaths with front pouches for stones that usually suck anyways. Good job finding the knife. I sold one of mine off a while back and still have one left. Great knives. In my opinion, not the most all-around useful knife ever made, but you just can't beat the curves and lines on that thing. Gorgeous knife.
