anybody have one? know anything about how they perform? i'm feeling the need for another woods knife. something 7 1/2" or shorter (blade) was leaning towards Ranger RD6, but something about that Recon Scout in SM3 that is just turnin me on. lookin good aint the only requirement, though, i need something that's gonna hold up to some (ab)use

Something that's gonna hold up to some (ab)use?
Cold Steel might but I'd trust the Ranger RD6 more.

I used to have one. I don't know what you mean with this [ab]use thing but if you intend to cut bolts and metal tubing I would recomment something else ... let's say a 20$ cold chisel would do good :)

My Scout did a few good jobs on trees and dry wood quite nice so I guess it works. Even better on greeen wood .. smooth convexed edge and no blade coating helps with that

An alternative is ESEE-6, will hold up to all the abuse and even if it does not you have a no questions asked, transferable lifetime warranty.

http://www.eseeknives.com/rc-6.htm

About $120 with free shipping.

I'll only do sub $100 Cold Steel knives. For fixed blades ESEE seems to be best deal across the board with great sheaths, functional design without flashy, perfect warranty and best bonus of made in America knives and sheaths.

If not this try a beater $40 Ontario Raider Bowie, will be just as tough as the Ranger with a sheath that is actually better and at least half the price.

I've used a Trailmaster CS (same as scout just a bit shorter) and beat the beans out of it, and No damage. The kraton grips give you a no slip grip, even wet. So its a very good blade. The ESEE 6 is one I just picked up (hearing so much about ESEE) My first was a Junglas, and I Really beat the snot out of it!!! *And it still Shaves.!!!* I'm not kidden ya. Also a great choice, but its bigger, so the ESEE 6 being as tough as my Junglas in tests so far, I would have to say thats WAY up there on a knife that size for your needs. And at less cost, Lifetime no probs asked usage. CS won't do that. But Mine works very well. As for the Ranger, I have not tested one so I don't know? but get all the input from the actual users here, and it will make your choice the best one in the end. *Lots of good info here.!* enjoy edgy

No Recon Scout for me, but the Trail Master has impressed me repeatedly in tests of wood processing performance.

OB the Marine speaks true! The ESEE 6 is a great knife with great people backing it up. I love Cold Steel Knives ( I try to ignore the hype postive or negative) however I only by CS when they are cheap. And I just bought a Raider and let me say that barring a short sword it may be the finest combat style blade in the world. ( I am biased as an American so take that into consideration!)

sorry to revive this, but i just wanted to say THANKS to all to provided info. it appears the RS SM3 will do everything i want it to. none of y'all have dealt with any loose grips or gaurds? that was my biggest concern, i didn't expect the 5/16" to fail as much as i did the fittings.

no ESEE for me, nothing against them, i just like the tip of my knives to be centered in the width of the knife. they're not. the Ranger RD 6 is high on the list because it's cheaper, 5160, and easier to wear around in public than a 7 1/2" bladed knife. the downside was it's coated (i realize it's necessary) and will look bad soon and also the i'm sure the grip isn't as comfortable. downside to the RS is i'm paying twice as much for a foreign made knife LOL. it makes weird sense, in a way, though because i have a U.S. made tanto, so a Japanese made bowie would fit right in :)
