Recon Tanto SK5 opinions

Its a tough high carbon tool steel, good abrasion resistance and edge holding, but it will rust quite easily. A great knife for the money IMHO.

It does have a Tuff Ex Finish which helps but will wear away with use. Keeping it cleaned and oiled works for me.

Old trick for jungle environments is using several coats of Turtle Wax (or similar) on the blade. Heat with a hair dryer (not heat gun) to open the pores of the metal, then apply.

How interesting. I have old fur trade iron from the 1700's that I have sealed. Electrolysis, brass wire brush scrub. Rinse. Then baked in oven for an hour at lowest setting (to remove moisture). After cool enough to handle I apply conservators wax. Same stuff they use in museums. My iron pieces (for years) have remained inert and stable, not rusting. Not exactly the same thing, but some similarities.

The tuff ex finish on my SK5 Recon Tanto is way more durable than the old type I have on some CS folders but not quite as good as my Lawman in XHP.

The new RT and SRK are a great buy at under 40 bucks. I have one of each and am liking both.
