Did early models of the Recon series come with an axis style lock? I found an old one for sale with and axis lock but I have only seen the lock back versions.

Yes, from 2001 to 2009 according to the old catalogs, but they called it the Ultra Lock (not to be confused with the Ultralock series from the 90's). In 2010 they switched over to the TriAd lock.

^ It's essentially just an axis lock, of course they can't call it axis. The only difference is that the lock face of the blade is cut inside the blade instead of outside the blade where the axis lockbar slide against(like hidden stop pin some makers like to do for liner/framelock).
Rumors are that CS license it from Benchmade, but would be nice for someone to clarify here

Interesting, I didn't know the mechanism was different from the Axis Lock.

I bought one in 2001.

It wasn't anywhere as smooth as the Benchmade Axis Lock is, in my experience.

The patent has expired on the Axis Lock and is being used in new knives by at least two other knife companies now.
