A few months ago, I bought this old Kutmaster Barlow for about $7 including shipping with the intent of putting some new covers on it. About 2 months ago, I bit the bullet and took it apart. Then it sat on my bench for 2 months as these projects often do. Today, I finally got round to it and here are the results.

I'm not really sure if I made it better or worse. It's still very rough around the edges and needs to be cleaned up more, but its ok for what it was intended to be, a $7 learning experience. I learned a lot in doing this, mainly, that I need to wait til I have a better place to work before I try and do it again. But I'm confident with a little more care and a little better preparation, I could do a better job next time.

I think it looks pretty darn good!

I'd be too skeert to even make the attempt... :o

Thanks! It took some time to make the leap and cut the pins, but like I said, it was only $7 and I already had the Micarta.

Good job getting the holes over the pins.
It was really hard to get everything lined up with nothing but a vice. But perseverance and calloused fingers solve many problems. My mantra came in handy... "Wiggle it a little, it'll go!"

Big improvement.
Thanks!

Looks good to me! I'll be trying this for the first time soon too, on a S&M gunstock i want to customize.

I think it looks much better. Now, what you did with those ball bearings is impressive! LOL.

Much better! I have a couple of similar projects that are waiting patiently for me to get some motivation, hopefully I can get some time off in the next couple of weeks to give them a go.
How did you remove the old scales?

Looks to be a good user to me.
Thanks!

You're braver than I! I wouldn't have started on anything costing more than $20. I'd say find a cheapie and do it to find out what you're really going to need before splitting a nice one.

Thanks. Stacking ball bearings like that requires a steady hand and a lot of magnetism. Because they're magnets. Remember bucky balls? Loads of fun, sad that you can't buy them anymore.

Because this was an old plastic handled knife, I was able to pop the covers off over the pin head, then cut them with some diagonal cutters.

Shout out to Esnyx and glennbad who's tutorials and pictorials inspired and guided this project. Specifically that tl-29 thread...

Thanks!

that's probably a good idea, maybe i'll pick up a RR gunstock for practice

I like it! The first one is always intimidating, then it's all downhill from there.

I look forward to seeing your next one!
