Recurve, is it better?

Welcome to the forums!

Better? Heh, that is hard to say.

Recurves must be sharpened differently than a non-recurved blade. if you don't know how to care for them, then they are NOT better :)

Recurves are excellent for slicing. If you use your big knife as a chopper, I don't think there are many advantages, and maybe you are actually disadvantaged (I'm not thinking of a very large knife though, like the Becker patrol Machete.)

One neat thign with recurves though is you can sharpen the sections of the blade differently and use the different parts accordingly. E.G., sharpen the outward curved "sweetspot" to a polished edge for chopping, and the inside curve with a toothy edge for slicing, and so on.

I am no expert on recurves though, and I am actually interested in seeing what others can add here! Cool question.

STUPID ME! Recurves if designed for chopping can kick butt! Just look at khukuris, though they have a much larger curve to them than other pieces.

Kensmart,

Welcome to the forums.

You can check the Himalayan Imports FAQ for some tips on sharpening khukuri knives. Just go to the Himalayan Imports Forum under Makers/Mfgs and look up one of the 27,000 post that Bill Martino has made on these forums. Bill operates Himalayan Imports and has a link to the FAQ under his signature.

The recurve is a terrific knife for chopping and camp craft. You end up with a knife that has more edge length per given blade length. These knives can be ackward for detailed cutting, they tend to be large and blade heavy, which is why khukuri knives traditionally come with a simple straight edge knife as an accessory.
