I've just got a DDR BULLNOSE and was wondering whats the best way of sharpening/ best sharpener for recurved blades? Is it possible to use a normal benchstone and how easy/effective is it for recurves? :D

freehand with a ceramic stick is how i do my recurved blades
the DMT diafolds work, but you'd have to be careful not to scratch the finish

What Musky said. Just use the "corners" of the Sharpmaker rods--not the flats. It works great on recurved edges.;)

Yeah, the Sharpmaker works great on recurves. As mentioned, just use the corners. This allows you to get every part of the edge nice and sharp, and also helps you to hold a consistent angle.:)

The Sharpmaker works great for recurves. That said, I would still recommend using the DMT diafolds that DEA mentioned. I like my Sharpmaker for steels like ATS-34, 8A, VG-10, etc., but with D2 and the CPM steels, I far prefer the edge I get using a fine diamond hone (followed by maybe one or two light strokes on the Sharpmaker, just to remove any burr).

I have several recurve blades from J.W. Smith in S30V and 420V. I've been able to maintain the razor edges using my Sharpmaker. I have an old set of the diamond sleeves that still work great and have found that you can get a bite on the edge of them when the stones are placed in the base with the edge out. I had one recurve that was dull and used this method to get the edge back on it and finished it up with thw white stones. Another thing I have discovered about using the edge to sharpen the recurves is that you need to clean them on a regular basis with Comet or some other abrasive cleaner. Clean stones sharpen faster and more accurate.
