Recycling Road kill with the HRLM

I picked this fella up this morning down on the main road while putting out our sign trailer. :D

I could probably get one most mornings if I went looking for them.
He appeared to be clobbered by a semi through the night, so still relatively fresh, well, fresh enough for the dog.

I’m using the HRLM, and what a brilliantly useful skinner/butchering knife it is.

Here’s a pic of the victim

Showing how useful the HRLM is in a skinning situation

Unfortunately, this fella was hit in the wrong end for salvaging too much useable meat, but I still was able to get about fifteen pounds of class A Wallaby steak off of him.

I didn’t take any more pictures as my camera was starting to get bloody and gunked up.

Hats off to the HRLM, this one is scary sharp! All of Swamp Rat knives have beautiful steel and are a pleasure to sharpen, as an edge seems to stay on them forever.

The end result. Bonnie gives a thumbs up, she ate about 3 pound of Wallaby steak, that’s a fair bit for a little dog.

Great way to go green!!!! Recycling is key!!

lol. :D That's what I thought, they only lay there waiting to get another animal squashed. This way I take what I want, dump the carcass up a bush track for the next critter to come along and finish it off. Recycling at it's best. :D

My dog thinks it's a good deal. :D

Hi all,

I have removed a couple of pictures from my post. My wife spotted them and reminded me that not all have had my upbringing in the bush, and that some some would find them disturbing.

No one here has complained, or requested their removal. I apologize to any person or persons that they may have offended.

Sincerely, Ian.

I don't really think any could complain.....one of the most...if not the most founding reasons knives were ever made was for butchering animals. I would hope "most" people here have used their knives for the same reason.

Besides, it was educational.....seeing the internal anatomy of a creature we don't have here.....................

POST EM!!!

Being a Hunter, I see nothing wrong with the pics and it was roadkill anyway. I have seen a few complaints on other forums but never the Busse/Kin forum's. If I am going to post graphic images, I will put a warning in the title for those with weak stomach's so they can bypass the thread. I think it is good that you salvaged some meat from what was going to go to waste anyway.

I often pick a fresh one up off the side of the road to bone out for dog food. :D
They just lay there until other animals get killed feeding off them.

The local council used to contact me when there had been a cow or horse involved in a MVA, I don't bother too much these days as I only have the one Kelpie here now.

Cow!!!! Holy Cow !!!!

As an Officer in a fairly rural area I have been on scene of a few incidents were vehicles struck horses, due to the height, they generally strike the legs rolling the horse into and over the car (I haven't seen a truck strike one yet) but a cow.......that would be interesting!!!!

Nearly all the semi trailers here have bull bars, with cow catchers on them. More cattle get hit by cars and trucks than horses, quite often through poor fencing, it's not uncommon to see cattle straying out on our roads.

Wallaby's and Kangaroos are a nuisance, they wait until your nearly on them, then come out from behind cover to hop across the road. :D Like I imagine animals everywhere late afternoons and early mornings are the worst, as the lighting is poor. They don't damage the trucks, but do a lot of damage to cars.

Nice seeing the HRLM at work!!!
I have a black paper on black coming!!

The deer are just like that here. Well except that they don't hop. :)

But they will catch a little air if you hit them at the right speed. A University Officer in my town just struck and killed a deer that darted in front of his police car.......he was subsequently written up and suspended for not using "due care" while driving down the road........ it was all captured on the dash cam.......pretty funny hearing him scream...

Due care? Going too fast? I mean, deer don't exactly stand at a cross walk and wait for you to pass.

To the OP, let's see the graphic stuff were not squeamish.
