What is red bone?
Real stag or fake?
Where does it come from?
What animal?
Endangered?
Is the red a true color or a dye job?
Does it chip easily?
How rare are Buck red bone knives, such as the 110?

Thanks

Are rare in Buck knives. Usually dyed cow bone then dremel tooled to put the grooves in. I have ( 5 ) 1 -110 Damascus blade ,silver bolsters about 1985 came in a black box with knife pictured on the box.
4 in a set of the 300 series Red Bone Special came in a Red leather (?) case
engraved silver bolsters about 1985 .

I have one from the custom shop with BG42 steel.its a great looking knife.

In 2004 the BCCI issued a fundraising 110 with "Honey Worm Bone" scales. I would imagine that would fall into the same category.

The red and brown bone folding hunters were first introduced in the 1990 catalog. They came with both the standard satin finish blade with brass bolsters and damascus blades with nickel silver bolsters. The bone is just that, cow bone dyed and jigged. The earlier models came without a liner. Later in the production run a dark liner was added under the bone handle. If you look at a cross section of the knife and can see a dark line between the bone and the metal liner you have a later production knife. No dark line you have an earlier knife and a more rare knife. It is hard to find these knives without the liners.

They were no longer listed in the 1992 catalog. Sp a two year run. The list price in 1991 was $97.98 for the bone and satin blade and $139.98 for the damascus and bone knives. Street price was considerly less. I bought the brown bone with standard blade at Farm and Fleet early 90's for $55.00. I have paid considerly more to get the rest of the knives.

Nothing wrong with that. I like bone, but I prefer it smooth, not jigged. I have a 110 & 112 going together with smooth undyed unjigged bone.

Did any of them come with rivets??? I've read that both bone and stag are prone to movement when humidity changes... :(

None of the red or brown bone 110's came with rivits. I did see one of the damascus and stag knives made for the blade show a few years ago with a loose handle. I should have bought it. That was the only 110 with a natural handle that I have ever seen with a loose handle.

Smooth bone...lets see

Brass and smooth green bone, no rivits, 110X tang stamp.
Brass and smooth white bone, no rivits, 110+ tang stamp.
NS and smooth gray bone, no rivits, 110+ tang stamp.

I know this thread is usless without a picture, but I'm not that advanced yet.

We'll get you through the thumbnail code when you start posting! :D

I have a white bone 110 going together now, but I don't really like dye jobs...I think if you fed the cow Nickel shavings for a few months, the bones would take on a blue-ish color... :D

I'm trying to find out what rouge to buff bone with to get a nice shine...

I like the gray/blue one. Sorry for the huge pic size. Didn't realize they would be this big
