I took the plunge and decided to dye my white FRN Dragonfly red with Rit. Went with red because I figured it would look good and give me a consistent color. Overall, the process was really easy and I'm quite happy with the results. May try to get a couple more white Spydercos and play around with different colors.:D

Will RIT dye any color of FRN? And how did you dye a dragonfly, which cannot be taken apart?

As far as I know, it will. Of course, you have to take the base color into consideration. White is easy, any color works on it.

I just dunked the whole thing. The water is sub-boiling so there is really no need to worry about the heat treat on the blade. I just washed it and treated it with some degreaser beforehand to make sure the FRN was nice and clean. Dunked it for about 10 minutes open and 10 minutes closed, and then washed it down and scrubbed with a toothbrush to get the excess dye out. Used canned air to get the water out of the action and then re-oiled the whole thing.

I'm going to let it sit for a couple days before I try to carry it. Want to make sure the color is completely set.

I'd buy that now!

Yeah, wish I had a few of these. Could be a fun project. Colors of the rainbow... Maybe I should take orders?

It's remarkable how the easily the frn takes the dye. If I hadn't done it myself, I'd think it was stock. The color is almost a perfect match for the gen. 3 trainer red color.

It reminds me of dying easter eggs as a kid. My mother did fancy Ukranian eggs. You had to draw out the designs in beeswax and then melt it off at the end with a candle. I suppose you could try something similar with a frn handle, but the wax probably wouldn't come off cleanly.

I think that looks great. I'm curious if it would be possible to somehow mask off certain portions. Maybe just half dip at an angle to get a split color scale...say a black and yellow tasman.

... only if you wanted a blunt tipped unsharpened AUS-6 blade :D

I don't know since when they've decided to reserve the red color to trainers only. Some like that, some don't (I do remember a thread a while ago that even turned ugly because of that: somebody switched the scales of a trainer and a live blade Endura AFAIR, which is easy enough. Looked great, but lead to argument. Go figure.)

purple is the new red! ;) Let's see what color they come up with on the new FFG FRN Enduras/Delicas. They WILL have a new color AFAIK, and I bet NO Folige green this time!
