Hi!

As I already told you, I´m glad you like it :) I knew you wanted it, so it was no big deal...

I think these Mercator knives are built for work. Their simple construction make them the ideal working knife. This one has a lock (some kind of backlock), so it will give you a good tool. The carbon steel is great for any EDC tasks and makes a fine patina. I have some of them anywhere here and use them as working knives.

Kind regards
Andi

Andi- My Brother showed me his k55k a few years ago but I never really looked at it. Now I know that the Cat folder is one of the best knife buys out there. Also, a dear knife knut friend of mine just said the same thing and placed an order for one today!
Alles im Butter!

Thanks sir!
I might just get a Black in SS, just for the heck of it. And, I do like the Cat logo that is on those.

Congrats! And kudos to Andi too

Since I caught my first bass of the season with my Mercator in my pocket I can guarantee it will be going on every fishing trip the rest of this summer :D

HI guys!

Well, they offer different types of the Mercators here in Germany. Big ones, small one, with or without that "backlock". But all are very nice working knives. Nothing really for sunday, but for an good EDC they are fine, I think.

I think I should explain what the K55K means... that´s interessting (imo)

K = Kaufmann (family name of the inventor of that knife)
55 = House Nr. 55 at the Hochstrasse in Solingen I think
K = Katze which means Cat in English language.

They are built the same way since 1867 by Otter Messer, Solingen. The family Kaufmann invited them, but let them build unter contract to get an utility knife for the german troops in the german colonies. The Mercator knives were also carried during WWI and WWII buy german soldiers as standart pocket / utility knives.

In Germany on older products you can find any of these numbers and letters. Here we have an old parfume (usually used by very, very old ladies). It´s called Kölsch Wasser (Cologne Water) and has the 4711. That means, this was the adress where the parfume was made first. In Cologne at the House Number 4711 (at that times, the numbers were given in different ways, no street names - just numbers). Sorry for getting OT.

Kind regards
Andi

Andi- Thanks! This is very interesting!
I do miss the pocket clip.

Cool info, Andi! I wish that distributors for Ottermesser here in the US would carry more varieties. The classic is great but the others would be pretty sweet too! I'd love a larger one.

Thank you guys... but being honest; these are no infos I have in my head just right now. I read it in an old german knife magazine at a thread about Mercator knives. There I got the infos ;) :)

Kind regards
Andi

All the same, you relayed that information. Still handy and worthy of thanks. ;)

Hard to go wrong with the old Mercator. Their 1095 can take a scary sharp edge and keep it reasonably well.

Thank you Frank for posting this!

I knew that XC75 was used, but I didn´t know very much about technical specs :)

Kind regards
Andi
