I have been making little sticks out of big sticks all afternoon and got to wondering if what I believe is Red Oak would make good knife handles.
Isn't it redoak that smells really bad when you split or cut it? I at least know its oak. Hundreds of varietys around here.. It has been standing dead a couple of years and top ends are pretty dry, but the base and about 3 or 4 ft up
or more is still pretty wet. Neighbors finally cut it down in front of one of the storms a month or so back.

I think tomorrow, if I get back at it, I will try splitting some more edge to edge in a way that I can come out with somethinglike a 4x4 inch block of heart wood.

This splitter is 35 ton so strong enough and with a 26 inch stroke I believe I can slab off the sides and work to the center. This oak splinters up more than others I have cut when making the normal pie cuts.

A buddy might have a planner I can run some through afterwards, and maybe a bandsaw for thinner slabs. Will be interesting...

I guess Question was/is.... Have any of you cut what you know is Red Oak? Results??

Sounds like a photo op here .....lol.... Wore me out today doing it by myself, so may take tomorrow off. Maybe the splitter fairies will come during the night and finish it..... Can you talk about fairies here....... :D

Hi Pack Rat,
I've cut some Red Oak. The blade was dull and all I could smell was the familiar sent of burning wood. So when you get to the band saw; make sure it has a new/sharp blade :) .

red oak tends to have a fairly course grain structure, white oak is harder and denser, and smells differently, i tend to love white oak as it is hard as nails and makes furniture with a different "feel" to it. Hard to explain, but often red oak has a little "cheapness" to it in lumber form, big wild grain, open pores, etc, but white oak is less showy but has more restrained character, IMHO, I just bought 3300 Board feet of 1 common white 50% or better quarter sawn. delivery in a couple of weeks.
