I have been making little sticks out of big sticks all afternoon and got to wondering if what I believe is Red Oak would make good knife handles.
Isn't it redoak that smells really bad when you split or cut it? I at least know its oak. Hundreds of varietys around here.. It has been standing dead a couple of years and top ends are pretty dry, but the base and about 3 or 4 ft up
or more is still pretty wet. Neighbors finally cut it down in front of one of the storms a month or so back.
I think tomorrow, if I get back at it, I will try splitting some more edge to edge in a way that I can come out with somethinglike a 4x4 inch block of heart wood.
This splitter is 35 ton so strong enough and with a 26 inch stroke I believe I can slab off the sides and work to the center. This oak splinters up more than others I have cut when making the normal pie cuts.
A buddy might have a planner I can run some through afterwards, and maybe a bandsaw for thinner slabs. Will be interesting...
I guess Question was/is.... Have any of you cut what you know is Red Oak? Results??
Sounds like a photo op here .....lol.... Wore me out today doing it by myself, so may take tomorrow off. Maybe the splitter fairies will come during the night and finish it..... Can you talk about fairies here.......
