What do you want it for?

Looks like a good dayhike-sized bag. Are you sure the side pockets will hold a Guyot? They're 12x7x2 -- so they should round out enough for a Guyot, but part of that will be intruding inward on the main pocket.

To be honest, with their guarantee, I wouldn't blink an eye on spending that much money on one. IMO, the thing you carry everything else in shoul dbe something that will not fail, and it's worth the price of admission.

That being said, may I suggest a couple of non-tactical alternatives?

Check out Duluth Pack
Specifically in that size range, the Wanderer

I have also looked at those and they do appeal to me but the buckles make me pause.
I wish the Dulth packs had zippered side pockets. I like that the side pockets ride outside the pack and don't intrude in the main compartment like the RexOxx seems to do.
I like the RexOxx 12" zippered side pockets to carry a guyot on one side and big blades in the other but the 2" measurement is pretty slim.

One reason I'm going towards the RuckSack route is that I can't stand clamshell packs. I don't care for it falling open when i unzip the main compartment to retrieve a camera or some other item.
MaxP's bigger gearslingers are nice but they fully unzip and that's a PITA. I wish they made a large Lunada that only half unzips. The Malaga and Typhoon unzip to the base and that's not to my liking.

Any other suggestions as to brands that I might like?

Any reason? They aren't hard to undo, and if you want quick access, they actually stay closed pretty well if you just pull the tab end through the top of the buckle and don't put the post through a hole. Of course this won't hold if you shake it upside down, but for walking around and plopping it down, it works well. Also the Nalgenes I use, even with nested cup, fit all the way in the pocket, so they're secure, but easy to grip the top and pull out.

Yeah, I like rucksacks myself, panel packs don't do it for me. I really don't trust zippers, myself.

Not really. I either go the traditional route with one of my Duluth packs, or I go military.
Kifaru makes some good packs, they have some civilian packs This one is in the size range you're talking about. And of course they have a lot of options on the military side.
I'm not sure why you don't want a military pack (I'm assuming looks), but it's hard to beat a surplus medium ALICE as a daypack. I've seen so many high school and college girls walking around with them as book bags/purse from hell, that I'm not sure they're looked at as "military" anymore.

For that money, I'd look at the Mystery Ranch 3 Day Assault Pack. I have a MR Big Sky with the MOLLE/PAL webbing on the side and on the waist belt, and I love it. The 3 DAY Assault Pack could carry 2 Guyots and also has MOLLE/PAL webbing to put additional pouches. They also have a non-tactical version called the Sweet Pea that doesn't have the MOLLE/PAL, but has a Stick-It Pocket for tarps, small sleeping bags, shovels, etc.. I like the 3 zip design, because it allows you to get at all your gear quickly.

I really like the Mystery Ranch product line. I had actually ordered a bag but cancelled it before it shipped.
The one with the 3way zip looks like it could work. Use as a ruck but with the ability to unzip just the front. Looks like the side pockets will hold a GUYOT & nested GSI cup.
Decisions decisions :confused::o

I carry a Nalgene nested in a Snow Peak Mini Solo (the lid goes on the bottom) in one of the side pockets of my Big Sky.

Take a look at the Snow Peak Mini Solo (28 ounce pot w/lid and 10 ounce cup) paired with a Nalgene. You can be drinking tea, cooking Ramen and treating water at the same time. It has handles that don't get that hot and only weighs 5.5 ounces. If you pair it with a 32 ounce Nalgene it weighs less then a Guyot Design 32 ounce stainless steel water bottle by itself (the Guyot bottle is great product).
