Red-Tailed Hawks Gathering Nest Material

Stunning photos and a great write-up. You always make me want to throw my camera away!

All the best,

- Mike

Really amazing shots as usual.
Love to see the primaries waving to the wind created by wingbeat in the last shot.
I feel like I can hear the wing noise, which you must have heard to see them so closely.

Thanks for sharing, Evolute.

Awesome pics !!

How close were you ?? I remember at one time, when living in Md., there was a law(not sure if fed or state) about being to close to a raptors nest, but not sure if that was just for eagles or not..

Thanks for sharing

Thank you all.

Don't feel that way. You can do it!

Yes, I could hear their wingbeats.

At the closest points,I was about 10 feet away. At the furthest points, perhaps 75 feet away.

There was no nest to be close to – they were just starting to build it. And I was nowhere close to where they were building it. I was hanging around where they were flying to to gather nest material, not where they were flying back to, to build the nest.

Excellent , thanks !. I once watched an eagle grab a 'stick' for it's nest - it was 8' long !!
The red tail is very common and some winter over here. A great place to watch is along I84 in NY state .I've seen as many as 12 in a 1 mile stretch without even searching for them !

Great stuff! Excellent photos! The shot with the willow branch is a very emblematic image!

I too, am in Red Tail Country in northern California. Just yesterday, overhead, a pair of Ravens were annoying the hell out of one as it passed by their perch tree. He was calm. I wonder how that encounter finished!

There is nothing like the majestic beauty of a Red-tailed hawk and you have captured that perfectly in your photographs. Thanks for that....

Thank you all.

So that's still in effect ???? Your pics are pretty danged great.. Hope I didn't come across as trying to bust your chops or anything was just curious if that was still in effect...

Thanks. No, it didn't come across as trying to bust my chops.

I don't know what laws are in effect, where, but the concept that it's usually best not to approach their nests closely applies everywhere. Closely approaching their nests could lead them to abandon the nests. This is especially true for people who don't know bird behavior, and don't know how to behave minimally threateningly around birds.

Also, there are many kinds of birds, such as great horned owls, that are likely to attack you and/ or your dog if you are foolish enough to make them feel threatened at the nest.

Here's a phone snapshot I took of a sign warning that the owls might attack you and your dog:

It's no joke; I saw those owls attack several negligent fools' dogs while I was photographing the nest. You'd be surprised – a little owl can make mincemeat out of a big, vicious dog, and send it right to the veterinary hospital. Also, I know one nature photographer who was attacked by an owl; the owl raked his scalp – which also made him fall over and tear his Achilles' tendon.

Nature ain't Disneyland.

Mike,

Great stuff! We have a bunch of Red-Tails in my area. My property is sometimes referred to as Hawk's View as a result. Beautiful creatures.....
