Well gee, guess what I found? I was cleaning out my old truck toolbag and way down on the bottom was an old Buck 112 Ranger that I had forgotten I had, for about 30 years!

I bought the knife somewhere in the very early 70's. I think I remember having it with me in Thailand in late '72, and may have bought it in the PX in Bangkok, or possibly earlier in the year in the PX in Germany. Don't remember exactly where or when, but I remember it was very soon after it first came out. I broke the tip off somewhere around 1980 or so (probably doing something stupid), and reground the tip and raised the point a little as you can see it's a little short. But I then relagated it to the tool bag that I always carried in the back of my pickup. And there it's been for the last 30 years or so until I found it this week, buried under old rags, tools, jumper cables, tarps, old sandwich bags, and everything else you can think of.

It was actually in pretty good shape for being neglected for so long, and having lived in that bag and in four different pickups over the last 30 years. I polished up the brass a little, and put some Lexol on the leather sheath and it looks pretty good. The blade didn't have a spec of rust or tarnish. Just rubbed it with a polishing cloth a little.

Here's a few quick pics:

What can anyone tell me about the knife and when it was produced? I think the markings on the blade identify it as being very early production, maybe 1972 or so, which jives with when I think I bought it in late '72.

Anyway, it was great to find the old blade and clean it up a little. I just ran over the edge with the Worksharp and it still has a great edge. I think I'm going to carry this one around with me again for awhile. It's been 30 years in a dark bag and time for it to see some light and use for awhile. :)

I was also in Thailand for the first half of 1975, so that may be when I remember having it there. What indicates that it was 74-80 as opposed to 1972? The blade markings? Handle scales? Just curious.

The 112 did not follow the same time line as the 110. Yours at the earliest with that stamp and the large pins could be a late 1973 or early 74. Blade is of 440C. DM

Cool to rediscover a forgotten knife and it looks very good. Have you measured the blade length? It may just be the angle, but it looks a bit short to me. It should be 3".

OOPs! :foot: I just saw the part where you said you broke the tip.

. 112 . Their just faint

Yep, you're right. Looking at the blade under good light and a magnifying glass I can see the dots on each side of the 112. Good catch, I hadn't noticed that before.

So now I'm guessing I bought the knife sometime, somewhere before I went back to Thailand in '75. Funny how all those years of running around WestPAC and SE Asia all run together now.

Beautiful. Thanks for the story and pics. Wish I traveled thru time so gracefully...

Nice knife and great story!

I wish I could run across one of my old original Rangers.

Here is a picture of a Shedua (shegua?) wood Ranger on the top next to an Ebony Ranger (below) -

I traded a 2008 and a stockman for this knife from a guy at my moose club. Its his deer knife and he doesnt care about versions and variations as long as he has a good knife to gut a deer. When he showed it to me I didnt see the dots and thought is was a version not listed on Joes sheet. I got it home and took some pics to post for discussion and then all of a sudden the dots show up clear as a bell on the pics.
