Have you ever mothballed a knife and then developed a new appreciation for it some time later?

About two years ago, I got a Helle Futura in a trade. It is a beautiful knife with a comfortable handle, and wicked sharp. I considered it The One for awhile . . . until I bent it slightly at the base of the blade under vary light use (it is also possible that the tang was simply a bit loose inside the handle). At any rate, I bent it straight again but the whole experience turned me off and the knife was banished to the trunk of my car.

This past weekend, I was staying in a rustic cabin in New Hampshire's White Mountains with my four year old daughter. I did not have a hatchet for the campfire, so I got the Helle from the trunk and used it to baton a couple pieces of seasoned firewood into kindling. I was not at all gentle; in fact, I was pretty rough on it, curious to see if this treatment would destroy the knife. On the contrary, the Futura went right through the logs, made some feather sticks, and was still shaving sharp and straight. I have regained my confidence in my Futura, and it is destined to get more use now.

For whatever reason the 5 inch Kabar and I are real close-it's design isn't particularly well suited for bushcraft, EDC, cooking or any other use, and for that it sees long periods of shelf time-but it's size, weight, ergo and steel quality make me keep coming back to it. Definately a favorite around the house general purpose utility blade, even if it doesn't see much trail time anymore.

Payetterucker, I had a USAF pilot's knife like that. It was almost useless (for me) as a woods knife, but saw years of heavy use around the yard doing stuff that I wouldn't subject finer knives to.

When I found that I could bend my Helle blade laterally (with my bare hands -), it spooked me. Now that I have seen it hold up to some deliberately abusive and prolonged batoning, I'm willing to give it another shot.

It's gonna need a better sheath, though.
